Meteorologist, Data Scientist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maryland.

📋 Description

• Work in collaboration with meteorologists at NCEP, NWS field offices, academic institutions, and external partners to create forecasting tools for short to medium-range hazardous weather scenarios.

• Utilize scientific and technical meteorological knowledge to develop tools for hazard information assessment.

• Contribute to formal scientific publications and participate in off-site conferences, symposia, and outreach events related to hazardous weather.

• Collaborate on transitioning forecasting tools developed at WPC and other NOAA facilities into operational use at WPC and other NOAA offices.

• Create web applications using modern industry languages and tools, including GIS, Python, and PHP.

• Develop training materials to facilitate the transition of new tools and techniques into operational settings.

• Design and train machine learning models to detect precursors to hazardous weather events.

• Implement AI-based anomaly detection systems to identify errors or gaps in real-time forecasting data.

• Enhance existing forecasting tools and create new services and tools for forecasters.

• Apply neural networks to improve high-resolution numerical weather prediction models.

• Identify relevant satellite, land use, and meteorological datasets and create forecasting tools for web pages or forecaster platforms.

• Utilize AI-driven data pipelines to automate the ingestion and preprocessing of extensive meteorological datasets.

• Perform additional related duties as assigned.

⛳️ Requirements

• A degree (e.g., B.S. or B.A.) from an accredited institution in Atmospheric Science, Oceanography, or other Geophysical Sciences, Engineering, Computer Sciences, or Mathematics.

• A minimum of 2 years of experience in related fields.

• Proven experience in applying artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques to analyze and model complex environmental or meteorological datasets.

• Background in software development support within a team environment.

• Proficiency in Python and Unix shell scripting in a UNIX/Linux environment.

• Understanding of deterministic and ensemble prediction system datasets and their application in hazardous weather diagnosis and forecasting.

• Familiarity with weather forecasting, particularly in short to medium-range time frames.

• Strong organizational and project management skills.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for documentation and presentations.

• Ability to support team initiatives, exhibit respect for colleagues, and pursue team consensus.

• Experience with development frameworks for web-based mapping applications (e.g., ArcGIS, JavaScript, API).

• Proficiency in data science frameworks and libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-learn.

• Experience with deep learning applications in weather prediction.
