Merchant of Record – Accountant

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +29 more states.

📋 Description

• Oversee the financial and operational management of Merchant of Record activities across various supported brands.

• Evaluate, validate, and authorize high-value transactions and settlements in accordance with approval thresholds and internal controls.

• Track and address urgent payment exceptions, which include settlement failures, payment holds, chargebacks, and substantial refunds.

• Maintain processes for transaction-level reviews to reduce errors, prevent revenue loss, and ensure financial precision.

• Act as the main point of contact for payment processing, settlements, reconciliations, tax compliance, and financial reporting concerning MoR operations.

• Conduct and supervise reconciliations between payment platforms, banking activities, operational systems, and the general ledger.

• Investigate and resolve discrepancies, documenting root causes and solutions.

• Assist in month-end closing activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and reporting.

• Enhance control processes and pinpoint opportunities for automation and operational efficiency.

• Ensure the accurate collection, remittance, and reporting of sales tax across relevant jurisdictions.

• Manage tax configurations and collaborate with internal and external partners to ensure compliance.

• Assist with audits and regulatory inquiries related to payment operations and Merchant of Record activities.

• Develop, maintain, and refine accounting policies, operational procedures, and internal controls.

• Collaborate with payment providers and external vendors to ensure contractual compliance and operational effectiveness.

• Implement and uphold statements of work, contracts, and operational requirements with payment vendors.

• Create and maintain playbooks, standard operating procedures, and process documentation for scalability and knowledge transfer.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

• Between three to seven years of experience in payments operations, merchant services, accounting, finance, or a related field within e-commerce, SaaS, digital goods, marketplace, or technology-enabled services.

• Strong comprehension of payment processing, settlements, merchant accounts, and financial controls.

• Practical experience in preparing reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting month-end closing processes.

• Advanced proficiency in Excel and experience with large data set analysis.

• Familiarity with SQL and reporting or analytics tools.

• Exceptionally detail-oriented with a steadfast commitment to accuracy and thorough transaction review.

• Strong decision-making abilities under time constraints.

• Ability to uphold compliance, risk management, and financial controls while acting with urgency.

• Highly organized and capable of prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced environment.

• Comfortable navigating ambiguity and driving issues to resolution.

• Demonstrates integrity, accountability, and strong financial stewardship.

• Applicants must reside in or be willing to relocate to AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, IL, IN, IA, KY, LA, ME, MD, MA, MI, MS, NE, NV, NJ, NY, NC, OH, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, or WV.

• Preferred: previous Merchant of Record experience; familiarity with Stripe, Braintree, PayPal, or similar platforms; knowledge of Avalara, TaxJar, or similar systems; ERP experience such as Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central or NetSuite; experience in developing scalable procedures, automation, and controls.
