Medical Billing Specialist, Certified Coder – Laboratory

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.

📋 Description

• Ensure the precise and timely billing of Laboratory services.

• Address inquiries related to Laboratory CPT, HCPCS, and relevant ICD-10 codes.

• Edit charges for laboratory tests and assign the correct CPT/HCPCS codes and modifiers.

• Adjust charges when additional tests are requested or if tests are later cancelled.

• Investigate and resolve daily billing reports and work queues concerning registration errors, charge reviews, and claim edits.

• Adhere to compliance, regulatory standards, CPT/HCPCS bundling, and specific payer billing guidelines.

• Enhance revenue through accurate coding initiatives.

• Collaborate with Revenue Cycle, Coding, and other departments on inquiries related to patients and payers, coding issues, denials, lab orders, and trends.

• Reconcile invoices for referred testing, calculate charges, enter billable services, and report any discrepancies.

• Communicate issues and trends to management, participating in meetings and training sessions.

• Assist in the billing processes for reference laboratories and contribute to financial and statistical reporting.

• Promptly respond to clients and patients regarding any billing concerns.

• Complete daily tasks while fostering teamwork and effective communication.

• Support audits, special projects, and annual reviews of policies and procedures.

⛳️ Requirements

• Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), or Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) certification from AAPC, or Certified Coding Specialist - Physician-Based (CCS-P) certification from AHIMA, or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification from AHIMA.

• Experience working in the revenue cycle.

• Experience in coding.

• Knowledge of medical terminology.

• Familiarity with patient registration and insurance eligibility.

• Understanding of payer rules.

• Knowledge of CPT/HCPCS bundling and CCI modifiers.

• Expertise in lab-related coding.

• Knowledge and application of compliance and regulatory guidelines.

• Proficient in using electronic medical record systems and a Lab Information System.
