This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Manage a portfolio of Coding Fellows across various projects directly.
• Foster trusted relationships through regular one-on-one meetings and continuous communication.
• Gain an understanding of each Fellow’s strengths, aspirations, challenges, and support requirements.
• Establish clear expectations and collaborate with People Operations and project leaders on onboarding and administrative tasks.
• Take ownership of cross-project performance management, which includes expectations, consolidated feedback, performance assessments, coaching, development, and long-term success.
• Collect and analyze feedback across projects while considering assignment complexity, project context, ramp-up time, and evolving responsibilities.
• Acknowledge outstanding performance, provide honest feedback, and address issues through targeted improvement plans.
• Review representative code, pull requests, reviews, annotations, documentation, and commentary to assess quality and development needs.
• Collaborate with delivery and quality leaders to identify recurring issues and differentiate individual performance concerns from requirements, context, or process gaps.
• Create feedback loops with project managers, technical leads, reviewers, and other delivery partners.
• Set expectations when Fellows join projects, maintain context during transitions, highlight assignment mismatches or obstacles, and resolve conflicts equitably.
• Conduct career discussions and assist Fellows in their growth as individual contributors, reviewers, quality specialists, coaches, or mentors.
• Utilize contextualized metrics to track quality, throughput, reliability, team health, and retention.
• Enhance feedback and calibration processes while contributing to hiring and workforce planning as the program expands.
• Over 3 years of experience in software engineering, technical leadership, or a similar field, including direct management of programmers or software engineers.
• Proven experience in hiring, onboarding, coaching, conducting performance evaluations, providing actionable feedback, and managing difficult conversations.
• Experience in managing personnel across multiple projects, clients, teams, or changing assignments.
• Sufficient technical knowledge to read and discuss code and pull requests, evaluate engineering judgment, and comprehend core software-development practices.
• Ability to assess performance thoughtfully rather than solely relying on throughput, ticket volume, or other simplistic metrics.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, sound judgment, discretion, empathy, and a collaborative, low-ego approach.
• Familiarity with AI/ML development, model evaluation, annotation, data quality, or technical content production is an advantage.
• Experience in consultancy, software agency, contract engineering firms, professional-services organizations, staff-augmentation models, or similar distributed environments is highly preferred.
• A degree in computer science is not a prerequisite.
