Local Democracy Reporter

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Provide reports on Exeter City Council, Teignbridge District Council, and Torbay Council.

• Address political and social matters that impact local communities.

• Attend and report on council meetings and key decisions promptly.

• Develop contacts and investigate significant local issues.

• Create features and uncover exclusive stories.

• Produce content that may be showcased on the BBC Homepage and utilized by local media partners.

• Hold local authorities accountable through a service supported by the BBC.

• Share crucial narratives from diverse local communities.

⛳️ Requirements

• Qualified journalist with NCTJ or NQJ certification.

• Ideally possess shorthand skills at 100 words per minute or currently working towards achieving this.

• Demonstrate a strong understanding and interest in local community issues.

• Previous experience in reporting on local government or councils is highly desirable.

• Ability to identify stories arising from local council meetings.

• Strong knowledge of social media and its use for audience engagement and growth.

• Genuine interest in local councils and government matters.

• Eager to hold politicians accountable and ensure that local communities are represented.

• Extensive knowledge of the South West and a solid grasp of the coverage area.

• Ideally have access to a personal vehicle for regular travel to councils.
