This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Create innovative, data-focused story concepts that are timely, relevant, and beneficial to consumers.

• Investigate credible data sources to determine if story ideas can be substantiated with reliable information.

• Formulate clear and justifiable methodologies for data analysis and topic measurement.

• Analyze datasets to uncover trends, comparisons, outliers, and additional insights.

• Evaluate the scope of data, including its limitations and what it does not support.

• Present findings visually through charts, maps, tables, rankings, and other data visualizations.

• Transform research and data insights into editorial direction, story angles, outlines, key takeaways, and guidance for freelance writers.

• Collaborate with data analysts and freelance writers throughout the production process.

• Review and ensure the quality of analysts’ work, including source data, calculations, methodologies, and final outcomes.

• Assess writer drafts for story structure, research focus, and key insights.

• Oversee multiple projects, stages, deadlines, and stakeholders simultaneously.

• Partner with editors, designers, Digital PR team members, and other stakeholders from conception to publication.

• Identify opportunities for integrating AI and automation into research, analysis, quality assurance, and production workflows.

• Develop, test, and enhance AI-assisted or automated workflows for repetitive production tasks.

• Experiment with various tools to boost efficiency, accuracy, and consistency.

• Document effective workflows and assist in their integration into team production.

• Critically assess AI-generated outputs and independently verify data, calculations, sources, and findings.

• Stay updated on consumer trends, news, emerging datasets, and data storytelling methodologies.

• Frame research findings effectively for consumers and journalists.

• Generate ideas to enhance research, production, storytelling, and visual presentation.

• Leverage performance outcomes and team feedback to enhance future data-driven projects.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, data analytics, statistics, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.

• 1-3 years of experience in journalism, content creation, research, data storytelling, data visualization, digital PR, or a similar field.

• Internships, academic projects, freelance work, and relevant coursework are encouraged.

• Strong quantitative and statistical reasoning skills.

• Confidence in working with percentages, rates, averages, distributions, rankings, changes over time, and other common analytical methods.

• Excellent writing and communication abilities.

• Capacity to clearly and accurately explain data and complex concepts.

• Interest in researching and assessing credible data sources, including government and other publicly available datasets.

• Detail-oriented approach with a commitment to accuracy.

• Ability to question results that appear unusual or inconsistent.

• Strong organizational skills.

• Competency in managing multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.

• Proficient in Excel or Google Sheets, including formulas, filtering, sorting, lookups, conditional logic, pivot tables, and working with larger datasets.

• Basic understanding of statistical analysis.

• Knowledge of how to select appropriate methods for data analysis and comparison.

• Ability to inspect, clean, transform, and validate datasets from various sources.

• Comfortable with using APIs.

• Keen interest in developing AI-assisted and automated workflows.

• Ability to utilize AI tools thoughtfully for research, coding, analysis, ideation, and production while independently verifying outputs and upholding editorial standards.

• Experience with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Zapier, n8n, or similar platforms is a plus.

• Interest in data visualization.

• Familiarity with Datawrapper, Flourish, Tableau, Infogram, or similar tools is a plus.

• Knowledge of AP Style and digital publishing is a plus.
