This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Oregon.

📋 Description

• Create, write, and produce urgent and in-depth news stories across audio, visual, and digital platforms with a focus on coastal Oregon.

• Report on breaking news, daily events, and longer feature stories encompassing a variety of topics.

• Conduct research, organize and carry out interviews, and strategize future coverage of assigned beats.

• Collect sound bites, video footage, and photographs.

• Record and edit content utilizing digital audio tools.

• Utilize social media for gathering information and engaging with audiences.

• Work closely with OPB's social media team, reporters, and staff from various departments.

• Engage in local news programming by appearing as a guest on radio shows and podcasts or being debriefed by an on-air host.

• Promote the inclusion of diverse local voices in on-air content.

• Prepare reports for national news programs and newscasts as needed.

• Participate in fundraising and outreach activities.

• Meet daily deadlines while juggling multiple news priorities.

• Operate under the supervision of the Regional Managing Editor and Regional Team Lead.

• Travel throughout coastal communities and occasionally to other areas in Oregon and Washington.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field, or a comparable combination of education, training, and experience.

• A minimum of 3 years of full-time professional experience as a journalist.

• Proven experience in developing and maintaining a news beat.

• Ability to cultivate and maintain reliable sources.

• Excellent writing, interviewing, and organizational abilities.

• Familiarity with photography, audio, video, and social media in the context of news storytelling.

• Capacity to work independently in a remote setting while collaborating effectively with editors and reporters across the Northwest.

• Strong commitment to ethical standards in journalism.

• Capability to file live reports and engage in breaking news situations.

• Must be able to represent OPB to coastal communities.

• Passion for the mission of OPB.

• Interest in the evolving landscape of news production and associated tools and software.

• A valid Oregon or Washington driver’s license is mandatory.

• Willingness to travel regionally and statewide.

• Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 10 pounds.

• Preferred qualifications include experience as a bureau reporter, proficiency with digital audio recording and editing tools, skills in photography or video production, experience in following stories over time, community engagement experience, and bilingualism in English and another language such as Spanish or Russian.
