This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Conduct research, interpret, and apply federal laws and regulations, including the Animal Welfare Act, the Humane Methods of Livestock Slaughter Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the Administrative Procedure Act, and the Freedom of Information Act.
• Conduct research, interpret, and apply state laws and regulations, including anti-cruelty and open-records laws.
• Perform legal research on a range of animal protection and animal rights topics.
• Draft comments for agencies regarding proposed rulemaking and permit applications.
• Support caseworkers, researchers, and campaigners at PETA with various legal matters.
• Collaborate with others to strategize and develop litigation that advances PETA’s goals.
• Aid in managing litigation in both federal and state courts.
• Execute any additional tasks assigned by the supervisor.
• Provide legal advice and assistance to attorneys at the PETA Foundation on a variety of legal matters related to PETA’s animal-protection initiatives.
• Juris Doctor (J.D.) with up to three years of legal experience.
• Desired experience in animal law, administrative law, environmental law, and/or criminal law.
• Exceptional legal research and writing abilities.
• Supportive of PETA’s philosophy, with the capacity to advocate for PETA’s positions on various issues professionally.
• Strong commitment to the organization’s objectives.
