Lead Substation Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New Mexico.

📋 Description

• Oversee the engineering and design of transmission and distribution substation projects for utility, renewable energy, and industrial clients.

• Provide technical guidance and supervision for substation physical design, protection and control integration, grounding systems, equipment layouts, and power delivery infrastructure.

• Create and evaluate one-line diagrams, protection schemes, equipment specifications, construction packages, and design documentation.

• Utilize engineering expertise throughout planning, conceptual design, detailed design, procurement, and construction support phases.

• Assist with engineering studies and analyses concerning grounding, equipment sizing, fault current evaluations, and substation design.

• Establish standards across processes and practices.

• Lead engineering tasks and coordinate multidisciplinary project teams.

• Aid project planning, resource coordination, technical reviews, and project execution.

• Offer technical oversight for substation upgrades, expansions, brownfield modifications, and greenfield projects.

• Work collaboratively with project managers to identify and mitigate risks.

• Provide support during construction through technical consultation, design clarifications, and resolution of field issues.

• Cultivate relationships with utility, renewable energy, and industrial clients.

• Engage in client meetings, technical workshops, presentations, and project reviews.

• Assist in proposal development, scope definition, cost estimation, and pursuit efforts.

• Recognize opportunities to expand services and enhance client partnerships.

• Collaborate with regional and national teams on strategic growth initiatives.

• Mentor engineers and designers, supporting their technical development and knowledge sharing.

• Work alongside civil, structural, transmission, protection and control, and program management teams.

• Contribute to engineering best practices and initiatives promoting continuous improvement.

• Promote technical excellence, innovation, safety, and collaboration.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field with over 10 years of experience or an equivalent combination of experience and/or education.

• Professional Engineer (PE) license.

• Experience in supporting transmission and distribution substation projects.

• Knowledge of electrical engineering principles, utility infrastructure, and power delivery systems.

• Proven experience leading engineering tasks, reviewing technical outputs, and coordinating project teams.

• Familiarity with IEEE, NESC, and NEC standards and codes.

• Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, ETAP, Aspen, CAPE, or similar engineering and design tools.

• Willingness to travel periodically for project, client, and team needs.

• Visa sponsorship is not available for this role, now or in the future.

• Advanced degree in Engineering or a related technical field is preferred.

• Excellent communication, leadership, and client relationship skills.

• Experience in supporting utility, renewable energy, grid modernization, or energy transition projects.

• Background in mentoring engineers and contributing to technical leadership initiatives.

• Familiarity with substation physical design, protection and control systems, SCADA integration, or related power system applications.
