Lead Relay Field Technician

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Nevada.

📋 Description

• Calibrate, install, maintain, and repair protective relays and related equipment.

• Maintain, install, repair, and troubleshoot intricate control systems, protective relay systems, substation and electric utility protection systems, as well as SCADA systems.

• Interpret the project-level scope of work.

• Plan commissioning activities and manage resource scheduling.

• Provide leadership to the team to ensure test activities are completed efficiently, on schedule, without service interruptions, and in compliance with safety protocols.

• Interpret substation drawings, including single line diagrams, AC and DC schematics, panel wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings.

• Develop procedures and test plans for maintenance and construction tasks, including isolation plans and functional guidelines.

• Test relay voltage and current inputs, metering, relays, trips, alarms, and function switches both locally and via SCADA.

• Lead and conduct routine troubleshooting and repair of substation relaying and control equipment.

• Commission new substations, power equipment, relaying, pilot channel equipment, controls, and communication equipment.

• Offer technical support for projects to Field Service personnel.

• Provide technical mentorship to junior field service personnel.

• Function as a subject matter expert in protective relaying in the field.

• Act as the technical lead for small project teams.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 5 years of field experience in commissioning, panel and equipment checkout, relay calibration, testing, and repair of substation relaying and control schemes.

• Desirable experience in substation design, construction, commissioning, and SCADA/Fault Data/SER/Integration-Automation equipment installation and testing.

• Knowledge of three-phase power systems.

• Understanding of power system protection and control schemes.

• Familiarity with test equipment and test equipment software.

• Proficiency in the usage of test equipment and tools/wiring.

• Ability to interpret wiring and elementary diagrams.

• Basic testing skills to perform the outlined duties.

• Basic PC skills.

• Capacity to quickly learn and apply testing procedures for various types of substation equipment.

• Strong communication skills, capable of effectively engaging with diverse groups while adjusting communication for different audiences and situations.

• Ability to learn and implement client-specific switching procedures and safety measures.

• Capability to reference and complete tasks as specified in applicable specifications.

• Willingness to perform regular fieldwork both indoors and outdoors.

• Strong interpersonal skills, communication abilities, business acumen, and management capabilities.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook).

• A valid driver’s license with a good driving record.

• Proficiency in communicating effectively in English, including reading and writing.

• An Associate’s degree from an accredited two-year technical college in Electrical Power & Controls (EPC) is preferred, or an Electrical Engineering degree from an ABET-accredited institution, along with similar experience and training from the military.
