Lead Protection and Control Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +1 more country.

📋 Description

• Oversee the technical elements of electrical substation protection and control engineering and design outputs.

• Execute both basic and detailed design tasks.

• Manage engineering documentation for procurement, manufacturing, and site installation.

• Deliver protection, automation, and control designs for utility, Oil & Gas, Offshore Wind, transmission, and distribution substations ranging from 12kV to 500kV.

• Direct project design teams and enhance designs for installation, operation, maintenance, safety, quality, timelines, and budget considerations.

• Create protection and metering diagrams, tripping tables, logic diagrams, AC/DC auxiliary power diagrams, relay protection and control schematics, SCADA block diagrams, wiring diagrams, layouts, cable schedules, and bills of materials.

• Collaborate with layout engineers, relay setting engineers, site managers, commissioning engineers, and field staff on P&C design coordination.

• Liaise with vendors and manufacturers to review technical documentation.

• Utilize GE, SEL, and ABB IEDs to articulate protection and control philosophy and operational theory.

• Prepare engineering estimates, including equipment quantity assessments and proposal cost estimations.

• Evaluate project resources and materials, developing comprehensive project execution plans.

• Communicate effectively with the Project Engineering Manager to identify and mitigate project risks.

• Conduct battery and charger sizing, voltage drop, auxiliary AC power, and CT/PT/CCVT design calculations.

• Formulate and support FAT, SAT, outage, and cutover plans and procedures.

• Assist in field testing and commissioning, either remotely or on-site.

• Carry out engineering and constructability reviews as well as peer reviews.

• Promote engineering KPIs, departmental objectives, design processes, standards, quality, and productivity enhancements.

• Engage in return-of-experience and lessons-learned initiatives.

• Execute projects in accordance with business policies, tools, procedures, and methodologies.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.

• A minimum of 5 years of experience in Utility, Renewable, and/or Industrial HV & EHV substation P&C and SCADA design.

• Willingness to travel 20% of the time, including internationally.

• Capability to obtain a Professional Engineering license within one year.

• Preference for candidates licensed as an Electrical (Power) Professional Engineer.

• Proficiency in written and spoken English.

• Strong computer skills, including proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD and EBase.

• Knowledge of ETAP and Aspen Oneliner.

• Familiarity with Relay Settings and SCADA configuration files.

• Experience with GIS substation projects and AIS.

• Background in equipment and P&C field testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting.

• Understanding of utility substation, transmission, and generation safety, operation, maintenance, and testing practices.

• Familiarity with IEC 61850-based Digital Substations.

• Knowledge of NERC-CIP standards and guidelines related to Cyber Security and Grid Interconnection.

• Awareness of US Electric Utility customer design and construction standards, as well as NEC, ANSI, and NERC-CIP codes and standards.

• A Master’s degree in Power Systems is preferred.

• Familiarity with project management and commercial considerations.

• Legal authorization to work in Canada is required for positions in Canada.

• Legal authorization to work in the United States is required for positions in the U.S.

• Must meet applicable U.S. export-control citizenship or authorization requirements.

• Successful completion of a background investigation and drug screening, as required for U.S.-based roles.
