Lead Protection and Control Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada, +1 more country.

📋 Description

• Oversee the technical facets of electrical substation protection and control engineering and design outputs.

• Execute both basic and detailed design tasks.

• Manage engineering documentation for procurement, manufacturing, and site installation.

• Deliver protection, automation, and control designs for utility, Oil & Gas, offshore wind, transmission, and distribution substations ranging from 12kV to 500kV.

• Lead project design teams to create high-quality, safe, and maintainable designs.

• Generate protection and metering diagrams, tripping tables, logic diagrams, AC/DC auxiliary power diagrams, relay protection and control schematics, SCADA diagrams, rack and panel views, wiring diagrams, control house layouts, cable schedules, and bills of materials.

• Collaborate with electrical layout engineers, relay setting engineers, site managers, commissioning engineers, and field personnel on P&C design.

• Liaise with vendors and manufacturers while reviewing technical documentation.

• Utilize GE, SEL, and ABB IEDs to establish project protection and control philosophy and operational theory.

• Prepare engineering estimates and quantify equipment and proposal costs.

• Evaluate project resources and materials to formulate project execution plans.

• Communicate with the Project Engineering Manager to identify and mitigate project risks related to cost, schedule, budget, safety, and quality.

• Conduct calculations for DC battery and charger sizing, voltage drop, auxiliary AC power, and CT/PT/CCVT design.

• Develop and assist with FAT, SAT, outage, and cutover plans and procedures.

• Provide support for field testing and commissioning from either the office or onsite.

• Execute engineering and constructability reviews as well as peer reviews.

• Aid the engineering manager in achieving KPIs and departmental objectives.

• Contribute to the enhancement of design procedures, standards, quality, productivity, return-of-experience, and lessons learned.

• Implement projects in adherence to business policies, tools, procedures, and methodologies.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.

• At least 5 years of experience in Utility, Renewable, and/or Industrial HV & EHV substation P&C and SCADA design.

• Willingness and ability to travel 20% of the time, including internationally.

• Capability to obtain a Professional Engineering license within one year.

• Proficient in written and spoken English.

• Strong computer skills, including proficiency in productivity tools and CAD software such as AutoCAD and EBase.

• Knowledgeable in ETAP and Aspen Oneliner for relay coordination, load flows, short circuit, and arc flash studies.

• Familiar with relay settings and SCADA configuration files.

• Experience with GIS substation projects and AIS.

• Hands-on experience in equipment and P&C field testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting.

• Understanding of safety, operation, maintenance, and testing practices for utility substations, transmission, and generation facilities.

• Knowledge of IEC 61850-based digital substations.

• Familiar with NERC-CIP standards and guidelines regarding cybersecurity and grid interconnection.

• Acquainted with U.S. electric utility customer design and construction standards as well as NEC, ANSI, and NERC-CIP codes and standards.

• Legally authorized to work in Canada for positions based in Canada.

• Legally authorized to work in the United States for positions based in the U.S.

• Must fulfill applicable U.S. export-control citizenship or authorization requirements.

• Ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment.

• Strong aptitude for resolving customer-facing technical issues.
