This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in District of Columbia, +8 more states.
• Design and oversee the development of essential backend services, REST and GraphQL APIs, along with service-to-service integrations.
• Integrate all components of CenterWell's AI product ecosystem.
• Implement patterns for authentication, authorization, rate limiting, PHI access control, and audit logging.
• Incorporate HIPAA compliance into the platform's design.
• Define and execute reusable integration patterns for AI and LLM, including LLM routing, streaming responses, tool orchestration, and model output management.
• Create infrastructure for logging, monitoring, and alerting to ensure scalable and debuggable operations.
• Participate in comprehensive product feature development utilizing TypeScript and Next.js, covering everything from server-side APIs to rendered user interfaces.
• Lead architecture reviews and establish backend engineering standards.
• Provide support to care teams and patients across numerous CenterWell clinics via the platform.
• Work remotely with occasional travel to Humana offices for training or meetings.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
• Over 8 years of software engineering experience with a strong focus on backend and platform engineering.
• High proficiency in TypeScript and/or Python for API and service development.
• Proven experience in developing scalable, production-quality REST or GraphQL APIs.
• Thorough understanding of authentication methods (OAuth2, OIDC), API security patterns, and authorization model design.
• Familiarity with HIPAA requirements, especially regarding secure transmission, storage, and access control for PHI.
• Practical knowledge of Next.js and React sufficient for full-stack feature contributions.
• Demonstrated ownership of complex backend systems from architecture to production operation.
• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools and LLM coding frameworks (Claude Code, Pi Agent, Cursor, Codex, or similar).
• Must reside near one of the specified IT locations: NYC, NY; Louisville, KY; Tampa, FL; Fort Lauderdale, FL; Dallas/Frisco, TX; Boston, MA; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta, GA; Nashville, TN; Chicago, IL; or Charlotte, NC.
• Self-provided internet service must offer a minimum of 25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speed.
• Must work from a dedicated space free from interruptions to safeguard member PHI/HIPAA information.
• Preferred: experience in healthcare, financial services, or other highly regulated sectors.
• Preferred: exposure to event-driven architecture, microservices, or API gateway patterns at scale.
• Preferred: familiarity with AI/LLM integration patterns, including streaming APIs and tool orchestration.
• Preferred: experience in a greenfield or team-founding engineering role.
