Lead Backend Engineer, Java, Python, AWS

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Croatia.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and enhance backend services utilizing Java and contemporary JVM technologies.

• Maintain a hands-on approach to implementation, testing, debugging, and resolving production issues.

• Take ownership of technical design and architectural choices for intricate backend and distributed systems.

• Create scalable microservices, APIs, and event-driven architectures.

• Contribute to services, automation, or data workflows using Python.

• Construct and manage applications within AWS and Kubernetes environments.

• Oversee systems throughout their entire lifecycle, from initial design to production operation.

• Identify opportunities for enhancements in performance, scalability, reliability, and maintainability.

• Establish engineering practices focused on automated testing, integration testing, and code quality.

• Review code and technical designs while providing technical mentorship to fellow engineers.

• Mentor engineers and elevate engineering standards across the team.

• Collaborate with Product, Platform, and other engineering teams.

• Communicate technical decisions, trade-offs, and risks to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Contribute to CI/CD, observability, and production-readiness initiatives.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of professional experience in software engineering.

• Strong, recent hands-on experience in Java development.

• Proficient in Spring / Spring Boot frameworks.

• Professional experience in Python within production environments.

• Extensive experience in designing microservices and distributed systems.

• Familiarity with event-driven architectures and technologies such as Kafka.

• Significant commercial experience with AWS.

• Practical experience with Kubernetes and Docker technologies.

• Experience in designing and integrating REST APIs.

• Strong understanding of relational databases and SQL.

• Familiarity with CI/CD and modern software delivery methodologies.

• Solid automated testing practices, including unit and integration testing.

• Proven track record in making impactful architecture and system-design choices.

• Experience in mentoring engineers, conducting code/design reviews, or serving as a technical lead.

• Experience in owning complex features or services from inception to production operation.

• Excellent communication skills with confidence in cross-team and stakeholder interactions.

• Fluent in English (C1+).

• Nice to have: Experience with Azure in addition to AWS.

• Nice to have: Experience in building or integrating AI-enabled products.

• Nice to have: Knowledge of analytics, data-processing, or event-driven systems.

• Nice to have: Experience in an international, distributed engineering setup.

• Nice to have: Previous experience supporting multiple engineering teams or product areas.
