Junior Security Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Assist in ensuring that appropriate security measures are implemented to protect digital assets and critical electronic systems.

• Aid in the design and integration of security solutions for intricate issues, system administration challenges, and network problems.

• Carry out systems management and integration tasks, focusing mainly on cloud environments.

• Contribute to the integration and development of automated and AI-driven solutions within complex cloud settings.

• Support senior engineers with the configuration, hardening, and monitoring of security tools.

• Assist in gathering evidence, conducting control tests, and documenting the agency's security engineering efforts.

• Help to sustain and improve the agency's cybersecurity environment and tools under the guidance of the engineering team.

• Aid in maintaining Security Configuration Baseline Management (SCBM) artifacts and STIG-based hardening checklists to minimize configuration drift.

• Assist with updates to the Security Controls Traceability Matrix (SCTM) and prepare materials for the Change Advisory Board (CAB) review regarding proposed engineering changes.

• Promptly escalate technical issues, documenting actions taken, observations made, and outstanding concerns.

⛳️ Requirements

• A bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, computer science, information technology, or a closely related discipline.

• Evidence of a cybersecurity background through coursework, internships, laboratory experience, certifications, or prior professional roles.

• A working knowledge of Microsoft Azure.

• Understanding of fundamental security principles: access control, encryption, logging and monitoring, and vulnerability management.

• U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency, with all work conducted within the continental U.S.

• Capability to pass a federal agency suitability or background investigation.

• Internship, co-op, or 1 to 2 years of relevant experience in a security or IT operations position (preferred).

• Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, PowerShell, or Bash (preferred).

• Familiarity with security automation, low-code/no-code platforms, or AI-assisted tools (preferred).

• Acquaintance with the NIST SP 800-53 control families (preferred).

• Security+ or an equivalent entry-level certification (preferred).

• Prior experience in federal or other regulated environments (preferred).

• Understanding cloud fundamentals and systems integration (Microsoft Azure).

• Knowledge of security control concepts and secure configuration essentials.

• Expertise in scripting and task automation (Python, PowerShell, Bash).

• Familiarity with SIEM (Splunk), vulnerability scanning tools (Qualys, Tenable), and endpoint security solutions.

• Understanding of logging, monitoring, and basic incident triage principles.

• Basic networking knowledge: TCP/IP, DNS, firewalls, and segmentation.

• Exposure to AI-assisted and low-code/no-code security functionalities.

• Familiarity with configuration baseline management (SCBM), STIG-based hardening, control traceability (SCTM), and change management (CAB) practices.

• Capability in technical documentation and evidence collection.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a distributed team.

• Comfort in a fully remote work environment with a camera-on meeting culture.

• Good judgment in determining when to make decisions and when to escalate issues.

• A collaborative approach with system owners, business owners, developers, and assessors.

• Attention to detail in documentation quality and commitment follow-through.
