Java Software Engineer – Backend

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Turkey.

📋 Description

• Contribute to the development of Mercury’s next-generation shipping platform by designing, documenting, coding, maintaining, refactoring, fixing, testing, and enhancing backend software.

• Create and implement a scalable, secure, maintainable, and thoroughly documented API platform.

• Collaborate with DevOps engineers to design and test build pipelines, as well as develop deployment tools and scripts.

• Design and/or code event data collection, notifications, and observability filters.

• Establish microservices and APIs in coordination with architects and front-end developers.

• Work alongside QA to define testing strategies, toolsets, and practices.

• Enhance backend implementation practices, technology stack, standards, and third-party tools across production teams.

• Partner with the Boston Product Team to shape product requirements and the roadmap.

• Ensure that technical needs are met while preserving usability.

• Conduct developer research with platform clients and internal teams.

• Champion customer perspectives in product development.

• Simplify complex problems into elegant solutions.

• Create a distinctive experience for Mercury’s shipping platform.

• Optimize application performance, scalability, and reliability.

• Mentor and guide junior engineers.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proficient in English.

• Bachelor’s degree in a software-focused engineering domain, such as Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, or Computer Science and Engineering.

• 4–7 years of experience in backend development using Java, with at least 3+ years of experience with version 9 or higher.

• Strong foundational knowledge in core Java.

• At least 2 years of recent experience with Spring Boot / Spring.

• Expertise in Spring Data, Hibernate, and JPA.

• Experience with unit testing and test-driven development methodologies.

• Familiarity with code review processes and a willingness to engage in them.

• Knowledge of Git and distributed version control systems.

• Understanding of RESTful API design and implementation.

• Familiarity with backend architectural design concepts and proven experience in microservices architecture.

• Experience utilizing Kafka for messaging and streaming.

• Knowledge of database technologies, especially PostgreSQL.

• In-depth understanding of OAuth, REST, and JWT.

• Familiarity with OOP principles, algorithms, and problem-solving techniques.

• Experience in developing large-scale backends with accompanying developer portals/marketplaces.

• Solid understanding of lean/agile values, principles, and related practices.

• Good grasp of Linux shell commands and scripting.

• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.

• Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.

• Capability to work independently and collaboratively in a team, prioritize customer needs, and deliver results in a timely manner.
