Hospital Inpatient Coder

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Arizona, +7 more states.

📋 Description

• Review medical records and health information, assigning the appropriate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes.

• Identify primary diagnoses, comorbidities/complications, present-on-admission indicators, and sequence codes to establish the correct DRG.

• Abstract necessary data elements for reporting and statistical purposes.

• Implement industry standards for category coding and evaluate impacts such as SDOH and PSI.

• Address complex inpatient edits and alerts by utilizing current guidelines.

• Engage with Clinical Documentation Integrity team members regarding intricate clinical situations.

• Convert medical records, diagnoses, procedures, and treatments into standardized codes.

• Work together with the CDI team to harmonize clinical and coding practices.

• Identify opportunities for documentation enhancement and seek clarification from physicians.

• Input coded and abstracted data into designated systems.

⛳️ Requirements

• High school diploma or GED is mandatory.

• A minimum of 3 years of experience in code assignment within a healthcare environment performing comparable coding responsibilities.

• Registered Health Info Tech, Registered Health Info Admin, Certified Professional Coder, Certified Coding Specialist, or Certified Coding Specialist Physician is required upon hire.

• Proficient in ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding.

• Familiarity with Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Groups (MS-DRG) and All Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (APR-DRG).

• Understanding of Social Determinants of Health (SDOH), Hierarchical Conditions (HCC), and conditions affecting severity.

• Experience with electronic medical/health systems and coding applications such as EPIC (CS-Link), EPIC HB/PB modules, Solventum 360Encompass, Solventum Standalone Encoder, and Select Coder.

• Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and clinical practices.

• Ability to apply current coding guidelines and address complex inpatient edits/alerts.
