Head of Engineering, POS Application Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in South Africa.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the technical strategy and architecture for the POS Application Platform as the domain CTO for POS device software.

• Develop and oversee developer experience, platform reliability, foundational frameworks, and squad adoption.

• Establish and uphold engineering standards across various POS device types and OEM manufacturers.

• Provide functional leadership to POS engineers embedded in Payments, Onboarding, VAS, Savings, and Loans squads.

• Manage POS observability, including monitoring, alerting, and incident response frameworks.

• Drive the architecture for supporting, onboarding, governing, and integrating diverse POS device types.

• Collaborate with OEM partners and the POS hardware team for the introduction of new devices.

• Build and expand the POS platform team through hiring, mentoring, and organizational structuring.

• Translate platform decisions into business impact alongside Product, Payments, and Business leadership.

• Establish and enhance engineering processes, tooling standards, CI/CD pipelines, and developer productivity metrics.

• Lead the foundational Kotlin-based engineering layer that supports Moniepoint's POS products.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 10 years of hands-on software engineering experience.

• At least 6 years of experience leading engineering teams through significant growth phases.

• Direct, hands-on experience in building software on Point-of-Sale terminal devices at the application layer; candidates lacking this will not be considered.

• Strong working knowledge of EMV standards.

• Experience with PCI DSS and P2PE payment certification processes; candidates without this will not be considered.

• In-depth Android engineering expertise in Kotlin and Java.

• Experience in building internal engineering platforms, shared libraries, developer tools, or foundational frameworks utilized by other engineering teams.

• Experience in governing or architecting across multiple POS device types from various hardware manufacturers.

• Proven experience in building or advancing platform engineering functions.

• Demonstrated capability to scale engineering teams and establish organizational leadership layers.

• Experience at a company processing high volumes of financial transactions in a regulated environment.

• A fintech background is strongly preferred.

• Familiarity with terminal management systems and device observability tooling is beneficial.

• Backend engineering experience in Java or Spring Boot is a plus.

• Experience collaborating directly with OEM vendors on hardware specification and integration is an advantage.

• Exposure to C or C++ is a plus.

• Experience in multinational or large VC-backed companies is ideal.

• Experience solely in Series A or B startups is unlikely to demonstrate the necessary scale and complexity.
