This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.
• Oversee engineering and design efforts for substation and switchyard components in significant transmission initiatives.
• Collaborate with internal teams, manage external engineering consultants, and engage with project stakeholders.
• Organize facility design tasks, encompassing engineering scope, budget, and timeline.
• Coordinate interactions with transmission line, civil/structural, environmental, and construction groups.
• Evaluate detailed design submissions, calculations, and studies to ensure adherence to technical standards, safety, constructability, permitting, land requirements, customer specifications, and execution needs.
• Manage both primary and secondary substation engineering deliverables, including protection and control systems, SCADA, communications, one-lines, equipment specifications, physical layouts, grounding, lightning protection, and cable/conduit designs.
• Provide engineering assistance for project development, interconnection studies, permitting, landowner coordination, equipment procurement, commissioning readiness, and risk mitigation.
• Participate in site assessments to evaluate suitability, constructability, access, laydown requirements, and tie-in/outage considerations.
• Collaborate with equipment suppliers and manufacturers for technical and commercial alignment.
• Enhance knowledge of HVDC converter station and substation technologies and share insights with the engineering team.
• Prepare and revise facility CAPEX estimates.
• Conduct technical due diligence and fatal flaw analyses for development opportunities and acquisitions.
• Recommend and implement lessons learned and standardization for ongoing improvement.
• Report directly to the Vice President of Engineering.
• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
• 5+ years of experience managing substation engineering design; 8+ years preferred.
• Familiarity with substation design, procurement, construction, testing, and commissioning.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office suite applications, including Excel and PowerPoint.
• Skilled in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
• Experience with power system and/or protection tools such as ASPEN OneLiner, ETAP, PSCAD, or SEL software preferred.
• Familiarity with grounding analysis tools such as CDEGS preferred.
• Project execution experience in FACTS/STATCOM or HVDC projects preferred.
• Active involvement in CIGRE or IEEE preferred.
• Operational experience with high voltage facilities preferred.
• Registered Professional Engineer preferred.
• Capacity to learn HVDC development and substation technologies.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and lead external teams.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, writing, presentation, prioritization, computer, and data management skills.
• Capability to collaborate effectively in a small, non-hierarchical organization.
• Ability to handle deadline pressure, ambiguity, uncertainty, and project changes.
• Willingness to travel up to 25%.
