Head of Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Egypt.

📋 Description

• Develop the R&D Center of Excellence from its initial hires into a comprehensive engineering organization across multiple verticals.

• Oversee engineers located in Egypt who are assigned to portfolio companies.

• Establish and uphold the standards for engineering talent and the engineers deployed.

• Take responsibility for hiring decisions and expand a team of adaptable engineers.

• Direct the forward-deployment model, which encompasses staffing, duration, and accountability.

• Lead biweekly vertical forums with technical leaders from the portfolio, pod leads, and operating partners.

• Set organization-wide benchmarks for software development, testing, deployment, and observability.

• Mentor deployed engineers and enhance the engineering methodologies of host teams.

• Manage and refine the process from ideation to production, including workflows and infrastructure.

• Foster organization-wide capabilities in agent building, analytics, and automation.

• Head Emergence’s central engineering team, overseeing architecture direction, technical evaluations, and internal AI-driven tools.

• Act as Emergence’s primary spokesperson on AI, establishing effective engineering guidelines related to AI.

• Collaborate with CEOs, CTOs, and operating partners to translate engineering requirements into staffing needs, capabilities, and standards.

• Oversee the financial aspects of the deployment model in conjunction with the managing partner.

• Regularly meet with technical leaders from the portfolio to assess engineer performance and necessary adjustments.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive technical expertise as a hands-on builder with experience in designing, constructing, and operating production systems.

• Several years of experience in designing, building, and managing production systems.

• Proven history of scaling teams, systems, and architecture.

• Experience in expanding an engineering organization from a small team to a larger workforce of engineers.

• Background in managing multiple engineering teams concurrently across various products, codebases, or companies.

• Ability to influence teams without direct authority.

• Demonstrated high standards for engineering talent, including recruitment and making challenging performance evaluations.

• Experience in establishing delivery processes and infrastructure to enhance speed and safety.

• Proficiency in modern engineering practices and regular, secure software delivery.

• Current hands-on experience with AI in engineering and a clear understanding of its future implications.

• Familiarity with various programming languages, technology stacks, cloud environments, and fields such as data, automation, or agentic systems.

• Clear and confident communication in English.

• Must be based in Egypt.

• Ability to work a Cairo afternoon-to-evening schedule with significant overlap into the US workday.

• Capacity to evaluate engineering quality across the mentioned languages, frameworks, data/AI technologies, cloud/infrastructure technologies, and domains.
