Head of Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Germany.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of software development across various products and teams.

• Create realistic roadmaps, identify dependencies early, and consistently meet commitments.

• Collaborate with Product & Growth to manage engineering capacity in accordance with company and product priorities.

• Establish clear delivery routines and resolve blockers that span across teams.

• Lead and mentor Engineering Leads and other key technical personnel.

• Work alongside P&O and the CPTO to further develop the organization, career paths, succession planning, hiring, and onboarding.

• Define clear roles, responsibilities, expectations, and guidelines for development teams.

• Set binding standards for code quality, reviews, testing, documentation, and readiness for release.

• Evaluate and prioritize technical optimization needs.

• Implement AI-assisted software development through standards, training, secure tool usage, and best practices.

• Collaborate with Product & Growth, IT Operations, Cyber Security, Customer Success, Partner Management, and other technical stakeholders.

• Manage the trade-offs between product delivery, technical quality, and available capacity.

• Ensure transparent decision-making, seamless handovers, and aligned processes for release, rollback, and incidents.

• Partner with the Head of IT Operations to guarantee stable, secure, and efficient software operations.

• Integrate Secure Software Development and Security by Design throughout the development lifecycle.

• Ensure security requirements are incorporated into architecture, implementation, reviews, testing, and dependency management.

• Ensure that suitable engineering resources are available to analyze and remediate security findings and incidents.

⛳️ Requirements

• Several years of experience in leading software development organizations, preferably in a SaaS, platform, or e-commerce context.

• Proven experience in leading multiple engineering teams or Engineering Leads.

• Strong grasp of modern software architecture, APIs, data models, software delivery, and scalable development processes.

• Experience with legacy systems, modernization efforts, and incremental architecture transformations.

• Familiarity with capacity planning, prioritization, automated testing, release readiness, and collaboration with CI/CD and platform teams.

• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted software development, modern coding assistants, or agentic engineering workflows.

• Familiarity with Secure Software Development, Security by Design, and addressing technical security issues.

• Understanding of deployability, observability, reliability, and operational readiness.

• Clear, direct, and accountable communication skills in both German and English.

• Ability to translate technical decisions into business implications, risks, and trade-offs.

• Comfortable collaborating with Product & Growth, IT Operations, Cyber Security, executive leadership, and other stakeholders.
