Head of Backend

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Define the strategy, architecture, and technical direction for backend engineering.

• Assist engineers in making robust technical and architectural choices.

• Establish engineering principles and guidelines.

• Steer the transformation of the monolithic system and modern service-oriented platform.

• Provide coaching and mentorship to engineers.

• Evaluate significant designs and architectural choices.

• Advocate for security, quality, testing, observability, resilience, and performance.

• Identify technical risks and aid teams in navigating them.

• Assess technologies and patterns for their relevance to SchemeServe.

• Balance long-term engineering excellence with immediate business requirements.

• Occasionally engage in direct implementation through prototyping, investigation, or assisting teams in overcoming obstacles.

• Collaborate closely with the CTO and engineering teams as the primary technical partner for backend engineering.

• Must currently reside in the UK.

• Must possess the right to work in the UK.

• Extensive experience in modern backend engineering.

• Strong commercial experience with C#/.NET.

• In-depth knowledge of software architecture, distributed systems, and API design.

• Familiarity with mature legacy applications and contemporary service-oriented architectures.

• Robust cloud architecture experience, preferably with Azure.

• Comprehensive understanding of databases, security, testing, maintainability, and modern software delivery practices.

• Experience in shaping engineering principles and practices across teams.

• Proven track record of enhancing engineers through mentoring, coaching, and technical leadership.

• Capability to constructively challenge experienced engineers without becoming a gatekeeper.

• Exceptional communication skills with the ability to influence without relying on authority.

• Strong technical judgment in balancing quality, complexity, risk, cost, and business value.
