This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Take charge of the group's global tax strategy throughout its international framework and operations.
• Act as the primary tax advisor to executive leadership on pivotal tax and strategic issues.
• Spearhead complex international and cross-border tax planning while creating tax-efficient corporate structures.
• Provide guidance on foreign affiliates, surplus planning, repatriation, cross-border distributions, tax treaties, withholding taxes, permanent establishment, residency, central management and control, and other cross-border factors.
• Manage the transfer pricing strategy and supervise associated policies, methodologies, intercompany agreements, documentation, and implementation.
• Direct tax analysis related to intercompany financing, service arrangements, intellectual property agreements, distributions, and other cross-border transactions.
• Establish and enhance tax governance, internal controls, documentation standards, and tax risk management processes.
• Oversee direct and indirect tax compliance and reporting responsibilities across relevant jurisdictions.
• Identify tax planning opportunities, structural enhancements, and significant tax risks as the group grows.
• Lead tax audits, disputes, controversies, and liaise with tax authorities.
• Coordinate and manage external accounting firms, tax advisors, legal counsel, and other specialists across jurisdictions.
• Collaborate with finance, legal, accounting, and executive leadership to integrate tax considerations into key business and financial decisions.
• Simplify complex tax issues into clear, actionable recommendations.
• Assume long-term responsibility for the global tax function and influence the international tax strategy of Progress Partners, a multinational technology group focused on building and scaling SaaS and mobile products.
• Over 12 years of progressively senior experience in Canadian and international tax, including substantial tenure at a Big Four or another leading accounting firm.
• Experience functioning at a senior leadership level in international tax, typically at the Senior Director level or higher within a leading accounting firm, or at an equivalent level in a complex multinational organization.
• Demonstrated history of independently managing highly complex international tax issues and directing tax strategy.
• In-depth knowledge of Canadian international tax and the application of Canadian tax principles to intricate multinational structures.
• Extensive experience with foreign affiliates, surplus planning, tax treaties, withholding taxes, permanent establishment, residency, and cross-border tax considerations.
• Strong background in multinational structures, international tax planning, intercompany arrangements, financing, distributions, and cross-border transactions.
• Profound understanding of transfer pricing strategy, policies, documentation, and execution.
• Solid knowledge of tax governance, tax risk management, and oversight of international tax compliance.
• Significant experience advising CFOs, founders, senior executives, boards, business owners, or other senior decision-makers on substantial tax matters.
• Experience in directing and challenging external tax advisors, accounting firms, legal counsel, and other specialists.
• Strong commercial acumen with the ability to balance tax efficiency, technical defensibility, compliance, operational practicality, and broader business goals.
• Capacity to operate with a high degree of independence, judgment, and accountability.
• Excellent analytical, written, communication, and negotiation abilities.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Law, or another relevant field.
• CPA designation is strongly preferred; equivalent senior professional tax qualifications may be accepted.
• Advanced Canadian tax education or professional training, such as the CPA In-Depth Tax Program, an LL.M. or Master’s degree in Taxation, or similar advanced tax qualifications, is highly preferred.
• Experience with intricate multinational structures involving Hong Kong or other major international operating jurisdictions is preferred.
• Previous in-house experience within a complex multinational group is advantageous but not mandatory.
• Familiarity with high-growth and highly international businesses is preferred.
• Experience with technology, SaaS, software, digital businesses, or other intellectual property-centric organizations is preferred.
• Proficiency in professional communication in English, including written correspondence.
