Full Stack Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and sustain the frontend and APIs of DataKind’s educational data platform.

• Convert product and user specifications, including direct feedback from partners, into clean, maintainable, and thoroughly tested code.

• Take ownership of features from technical design through implementation, testing, and deployment.

• Collaborate with Product and Customer Success teams to gain insights into institutional users and guide technical choices.

• Contribute to the frontend architecture, component design, and establish API design standards.

• Assist with data pipeline and integration tasks alongside the Data Engineering team.

• Provide support for infrastructure decisions related to application performance, scalability, and reliability.

• Ensure the validation, structuring, and security of data entering the application layer.

• Implement appropriate authentication and authorization measures for sensitive student data.

• Work in partnership with Data Engineering and Data Science to operationalize models and analytics into features ready for production.

• Conduct timely peer code reviews and contribute to technical documentation.

• Enhance and maintain internal tools, engineering process documentation, and workflow automation.

• 3-5 years of relevant full stack software engineering experience, showcasing substantial ownership of both frontend and backend systems.

• Advanced skills in a modern JavaScript/TypeScript framework, such as React, as well as backend API development.

• Proficiency in GCP, Python, and SQL.

• Experience in designing and creating RESTful or GraphQL APIs.

• Experience in writing automated unit, integration, and/or end-to-end tests and working within a codebase that enforces CI test coverage.

• Strong understanding of the intersection between data modeling and application design with data pipelines.

• Demonstrated ability to collaborate across engineering, data science, and product teams.

• Excellent communication skills, particularly in conveying technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.

• Must possess a permanent address within the United States.

• Must be authorized to work full-time and indefinitely in the United States without employer visa sponsorship.

• A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field is preferred.

• Experience with PHP, Laravel, OpenAI API, and Anthropic API is preferred.

• Familiarity with Git-based collaborative workflows and CI/CD tools is preferred.

• Experience in building or integrating AI-driven product features is preferred.

• Experience in implementing authentication and authorization patterns within production web applications is preferred.

• Experience in developing dashboards or data visualization tools is preferred.

• Familiarity with education data systems is preferred.

• Experience in building systems compliant with SOC2 and/or FERPA is preferred.

• Familiarity with civic tech, social impact, or nonprofit data ecosystems is preferred.
