This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maryland.
• Design, test, and implement new full-stack features, web pages, and RESTful API endpoints for the modernization initiatives of NWPS.
• Create responsive and accessible web interface components such as hydrographs, data tables, map widgets, and location search views.
• Develop Python scripts and SQL queries to parse, transform, and store hydrologic datasets from multiple sources in Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL and S3.
• Write automated unit and integration tests using frameworks like Pytest, Jest, or unittest.
• Leverage VLab GitLab and GitHub for feature branching, pull/merge requests, automated pipeline execution, and conducting peer code reviews.
• Engage in daily Scrum stand-ups, sprint planning, story estimation, and issue tracking utilizing Jira/VLab Redmine.
• Support senior engineers with automated sandboxed tests and schema validations for public community-driven code contributions.
• Collaborate with Senior Developers, GIS Specialists, and Government hydrologists on features for the National Water Prediction Service.
• A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field.
• At least 3 to 5 years of professional experience in full-stack web application development and API engineering.
• Practical experience in building full-stack web applications, consuming and creating REST APIs, and querying relational/spatial databases.
• Hands-on experience with Git workflows (branching, pull requests) and writing automated unit tests.
• Proficiency in Python (FastAPI, Flask, or Django), JavaScript/TypeScript, and HTML5/CSS3.
• Solid understanding of RESTful API design, PostgreSQL/SQL, JSON/GeoJSON parsing, and relational database schema design.
• Proven ability to develop accessible web components in compliance with Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA standards.
• Familiarity with AWS cloud environments (AWS Fargate, S3, Aurora), Docker containerization, and foundational Infrastructure as Code principles.
• Experience with Pytest, Jest, Git repositories (VLab GitLab/GitHub), and issue tracking systems (Jira/Redmine).
