Forward Deployed Engineer – OpenAI Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Integrate directly within customer settings to evaluate domain logic and data pipelines.

• Oversee the complete delivery process from data exploration to OpenAI API integration and model optimization.

• Act as the primary technical partner and authority for the customer.

• Transform outdated SQL databases, large ETL processes, and neglected data warehouses into modern lakehouse architectures.

• Utilize Spec-Driven Development with OpenAI-enhanced tools like Cursor and Copilot.

• Create structured specifications for schemas, function definitions, and transformations.

• Automatically generate production-ready PySpark jobs, data models, and API wrappers.

• Design production-grade pipelines using OpenAI Assistants API, Structured Outputs, Function Calling/Tool Use, and multi-agent orchestration SDKs.

• Develop sophisticated RAG architectures leveraging OpenAI Embeddings and specialized vector engines.

• Set up evaluation frameworks with OpenAI Evals to assess accuracy, latency, and control hallucinations.

• Manage token budgets, implement prompt caching, batch processing via OpenAI Batch API, and circuit breakers.

• Educate customer engineering teams on OpenAI best practices, Azure OpenAI security protocols, SDD methodologies, and sustainable MLOps patterns.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of experience as a Principal Data Engineer, Lead ML/AI Architect, or Enterprise Solutions Architect focused on scaling distributed data systems.

• Expertise in OpenAI Platform APIs, Azure OpenAI Service, Fine-Tuning, Structured Outputs, Function Calling, Real-time API, and OpenAI Vector Stores/Embeddings.

• Strong executive presence to engage directly with client C-suite executives and technical engineering leaders.

• Proven ability to use structured natural language specifications to direct AI tools in auto-generating ETL jobs, test suites, and schema contracts.

• Willingness to travel occasionally, approximately once per quarter, to customer sites.

• Prior experience in a Software/Data Engineer or technical consulting capacity within enterprise AI.

• Direct experience in migrating on-premises legacy data systems to Azure OpenAI cloud frameworks.

• Comprehensive understanding of AI governance, content safety filtering, and private endpoint deployments for OpenAI workloads.
