This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Manage the monthly closing process, including account reconciliations, accruals, payroll reviews, and quality of coding.
• Review and authorize monthly financial statements, encompassing net asset classification, restricted fund balances, and significant accruals.
• Take ownership of the chart of accounts as well as the class and project structure.
• Maintain the methodology for the allocation of personnel and shared costs.
• Conduct the annual external audit, which includes planning, scheduling, fieldwork, maintaining auditor relationships, providing management responses, and implementing recommendations.
• Oversee the preparation and review of Form 990 and its related schedules.
• Ensure compliance with California and multi-state filings along with charitable solicitation registrations.
• Apply and document accounting standards for nonprofits in the United States.
• Develop and uphold the internal control framework and financial policy manual.
• Design controls for a small team operating across three countries.
• Maintain the financial risk register.
• Manage relationships with banking, credit card, and payment processing platforms.
• Oversee cash positioning across various countries and currencies.
• Maintain a rolling twelve-month cash flow forecast and report on reserve positions.
• Prepare monthly financial packages for leadership and quarterly reports for the Board.
• Highlight significant variances, liquidity pressures, control failures, and compliance risks.
• Maintain the framework for funds re-granted to partner organizations.
• Verify the accounting treatment of pass-through funds.
• Supervise accounting and statutory cost obligations for operations in Ecuador and Peru.
• Provide financial oversight for legal entities and affiliates.
• Review complex and high-value financial reports from donors.
• Supervise, mentor, and develop the Finance Manager and the Manager of Grant Finance and Budgeting.
• Manage relationships with outsourced accounting, tax, and compliance services.
• Lead the transition of accounting processes in-house.
• Enhance financial management capabilities throughout the organization.
• A minimum of five years of experience in nonprofit finance and accounting, including at least two years of supervisory experience.
• Direct experience with accounting and reporting for United States 501(c)(3) organizations.
• Proficient understanding of US GAAP and FASB ASC 958, including net asset classification, contribution revenue recognition, and functional expense reporting.
• Experience in managing or closely supporting an annual external audit.
• Familiarity with the preparation or review of Form 990.
• Practical experience in internal controls, with the ability to assess what is effective in a small team setting.
• Advanced proficiency in Excel.
• Administrator-level expertise in QuickBooks Online or a similar accounting system.
• Ability to articulate financial information clearly to colleagues without a finance background.
• Authorization to work in the United States without requiring visa sponsorship.
• Proficient Spanish language skills are a significant advantage.
• CPA or an equivalent professional accounting qualification is preferred.
