Executive Editor, World Language Curriculum

📋 Description

• Oversee the editorial development of CIEE’s High School Summer Abroad Language & Culture curriculum portfolio spanning various languages.

• Set product specifications, editorial standards, development guidelines, quality benchmarks, and workflows.

• Transform academic priorities into curriculum structure, which includes scope and sequence, lessons, assessments, materials for students and instructors, supplementary resources, and implementation support.

• Lead the creation of prototypes and decide what should be standardized or adapted across different sites and languages.

• Ensure the curriculum embodies communicative, task-based language teaching, engagement in the target language, authentic materials, intercultural learning, and developmentally suitable instruction.

• Direct curriculum development projects from initial concept to final delivery, encompassing prototype planning, manuscript creation, field reviews, revisions, quality assurance, and implementation support.

• Design and oversee editorial workflows, schedules, contributor assignments, feedback cycles, style guidance, manuscript expectations, and review processes.

• Source, onboard, and manage freelance editors across various languages and program locations.

• Provide editorial guidance and manuscript feedback to editors and contributors.

• Assess manuscripts for learning progression, task design, cognitive load, feasibility, pacing, cultural authenticity, linguistic accuracy, style, voice, and overall quality.

• Identify project risks, bottlenecks, scope issues, and conflicting feedback; make decisions that uphold quality and adhere to timelines.

• Manage copyright and permissions for authentic curriculum resources.

• Collaborate with academics, Sales, Marketing, internal teams, external stakeholders, international staff, instructors, reviewers, and strategic advisors.

• Support annual instructor training through Canvas training and live virtual workshops.

• Develop or review training materials and assist instructors and international staff on academic issues.

• Utilize qualitative and quantitative data to assess curriculum effectiveness and suggest enhancements.

• Investigate trends and innovations in K–12 world language education, educational publishing, international education, assessment, and instructional technology.

• Provide curriculum expertise to professional development events, initiatives, and materials.

• Travel approximately 2–3 times per year.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in applied linguistics, second language acquisition, curriculum and instruction, world language education, educational publishing, or a related discipline.

• A minimum of 7–10 years of editorial experience in educational publishing.

• Significant experience in K–12 world language education is strongly preferred.

• Proven experience leading the editorial development of curriculum products from concept to final delivery.

• Demonstrated experience in establishing product specifications, managing manuscripts, directing contributors, and ensuring quality.

• Experience in developing or overseeing standards-aligned curriculum across multiple languages, including scope and sequence documents, lesson plans, and materials for students and teachers.

• Background in managing and developing staff while leading teams of 4–6 contributors.

• In-depth understanding of ACTFL proficiency guidelines, communicative language teaching, task-based learning, authentic resources, and proficiency-oriented instruction.

• Professional fluency in Spanish is required.

• Excellent written communication skills in English.

• Experience managing writers, editors, freelancers, external contributors, reviewers, or cross-functional collaborators.

• Strong project management capabilities, including schedules, workflows, documentation, feedback cycles, and quality control processes.

• A Master’s degree in a related field is strongly preferred.

• Experience teaching high school world languages is preferred.

• Familiarity with Google Drive is preferred.

• Experience with language proficiency assessment data, such as STAMP or ACTFL-aligned assessments, is preferred.

• Background in supporting teacher training, professional development, or curriculum implementation is preferred.

• A background check and verification of education and employment are required as conditions of employment.
