Engineering Manager, Services

📋 Description

• Identify the most impactful problems to be addressed through Product, Design, Data, and Operations.

• Establish success metrics that provide measurable value for pizzerias, customers, and the business.

• Direct architectural and engineering choices for services under your purview.

• Maintain a balance between speed, reliability, simplicity, and the long-term health of systems.

• Provide engineers with context, clear decision-making boundaries, and significant ownership.

• Eliminate obstacles and collaborate across departments to discover solutions.

• Enhance execution standards, minimize unnecessary processes, highlight risks, and create lightweight mechanisms that promote focus and learning.

• Utilize customer feedback, product data, incidents, and operational metrics to assess decisions.

• Recruit, retain, mentor, and develop engineers; identify future leaders and address performance issues.

• Foster relationships with engineering, product, and business leaders, influencing through sound judgment and tangible results.

• Address disagreements openly, resolve them constructively, and prioritize the needs of Slice and its customers.

• Report to an Engineering Director and collaborate with managers and technical leaders.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in building and managing customer-facing software or platforms.

• Demonstrated success in leading high-performing engineering teams.

• Strong technical acumen across backend services, APIs, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and production operations.

• Proficiency in Python, Go, Ruby, or similar backend technologies.

• A history of enhancing both customer outcomes and engineering efficiency.

• Capability to convert complex, ambiguous challenges into clear directives.

• Founder-minded mentality: resourceful, decisive, intellectually curious, and proactive in seeking solutions.

• Strong sense of leverage—understanding when to act swiftly and when a deeper investment is warranted.

• Willingness to challenge subpar thinking, including your own.

• Ability to communicate clearly and directly with both technical and non-technical audiences.
