Engineering Manager, Firmware

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Hungary.

📋 Description

• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of firmware and embedded engineers as well as team leads.

• Take ownership of the team's roadmap and delivery, which includes planning, prioritization, and removing obstacles to work.

• Balance the need for addressing technical debt with the development of new features.

• Provide guidance on network security, parental controls, and device intelligence features for Linux-based CPE devices.

• Oversee porting efforts as new vendor platforms are introduced.

• Engage in technical design and architecture evaluations.

• Direct native code design, network-stack integration, memory and performance budgets, and platform portability.

• Steer the team's transition from C to Rust in embedded contexts.

• Own the strategy for functional, performance, and resilience testing.

• Manage automated test infrastructure and plan for test lab investments.

• Advocate for test automation, CI/CD, code reviews, documentation, and incident response.

• Collaborate with product management, architecture, and other engineering managers.

• Oversee cross-team dependencies involving cloud/backend, QA, delivery, and operator-facing teams.

• Clearly communicate trade-offs to stakeholders.

• Drive decisions related to hiring, onboarding, and team structure.

• Report on team health, delivery risks, and technical direction to senior leadership.

• Operate within CUJO AI's ISO 9001 and SOC 2 Type 2 regulated operating model.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 5 years of experience in professional software, firmware, or networking engineering.

• At least 2 years of experience in a formal or informal leadership capacity.

• Proven track record of managing and developing engineers or engineering leads.

• Hands-on experience with native code development on Linux.

• Capable of evaluating architecture and reviewing designs in C and/or Rust.

• Familiarity with the Linux network stack and Linux OS architecture.

• Knowledge of embedded Linux build systems such as OpenWrt, Yocto, or Buildroot.

• Experience taking ownership of product-area delivery from roadmap planning to shipping and post-launch support.

• Understanding of CI/CD, TDD, and test automation methodologies.

• Experience with agile/iterative delivery methodologies like Scrum or Kanban.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

• Experience working in a global organization with international teams.

• Proficiency in English, both spoken and written.

• Direct experience in shipping embedded systems, firmware, or networking/Wi-Fi products in volume.

• Background in production embedded Rust or leading a C-to-Rust transition.

• Familiarity with firewalls, protocol clients, or deep-packet/traffic-inspection software.

• Knowledge of Wi-Fi chipsets and drivers, including those from Broadcom, MediaTek, and Qualcomm.

• Experience with CPE, router, or gateway platforms and vendor SDKs.

• Proven experience leading teams in operator or carrier environments.

• Experience designing automated test infrastructure for embedded or network products.

• Familiarity with Jenkins or similar CI/CD tools at scale.

• Experience managing remote or distributed teams.

• Experience in regulated or certified environments such as ISO 9001 or SOC 2 Type 2.

• Familiarity with formal product maturity frameworks like stage-gate or concept-gate.

• Experience mentoring engineers into senior and staff-level positions.

• Proficient in tools such as Jira, Confluence, and Slack.
