Engineering Manager, Data Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead and nurture a team of backend engineers, offering coaching, constructive feedback, and opportunities for career advancement.

• Take ownership of the delivery, accuracy, and robustness of the Data Platform's production systems, which include Tier 0 ingestion endpoints along with the associated pipelines and data stores.

• Collaborate with Product Management and engineering teams to define, estimate, and prioritize roadmap tasks, making real-time tradeoffs as necessary.

• Serve as the main communicator and contact point for the Data Platform with engineering leadership, partner teams, and clients.

• Promote operational excellence in areas such as reliability, observability, cost management, incident response, and on-call health.

• Establish team norms that foster collaboration, minimize silos and bus factor, while keeping engineers motivated and engaged.

• Engage in recruitment efforts to expand the team and elevate the engineering standards.

• Lead the Data Platform team in building and managing systems that ingest, process, and deliver real-time and batch data that drive LaunchDarkly products.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in software engineering, including at least 2 years in a management role overseeing a team of backend or infrastructure engineers.

• Proven experience in managing high-throughput, reliability-critical production systems involving event ingestion, streaming or batch pipelines, or large analytical data stores.

• Solid understanding of distributed systems fundamentals and the ability to guide technical tradeoffs alongside senior engineers.

• Demonstrated capability to collaborate with Product Management to convert business objectives into actionable engineering plans with dependable estimates.

• Strong history of coaching and developing engineers, encompassing performance management, career growth strategies, and technical mentorship.

• Excellent communication skills in a distributed, cross-time-zone setting.

• Knowledge of observability practices (including metrics, tracing, alerting, structured logging) and experience leading production incident responses.

• Familiarity with programming languages such as Go or Python, as well as technologies like Kafka or Kinesis, ClickHouse, Airflow, Athena or Iceberg, Elasticsearch, and Terraform is an advantage.
