This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom, +1 more country.
• Oversee a team of approximately 12 engineers distributed across three product teams through regular one-on-one meetings, coaching, and providing clear feedback.
• Establish clear expectations and define effective performance standards.
• Proactively identify performance challenges and manage difficult conversations as needed.
• Assist engineers in their development from junior roles to senior positions and beyond.
• Take ownership of the engineering performance and progression strategy.
• Evaluate and enhance career levels, expectations, and review procedures.
• Make consistent, evidence-driven decisions regarding promotions and career progression.
• Promote a culture of continuous feedback throughout the year.
• Collaborate with Tech Leads and the broader team on engineering hiring initiatives.
• Define hiring requirements, evaluate candidates, and uphold a high hiring standard.
• Ensure a structured and beneficial onboarding experience for new engineers.
• Strategically plan team composition, capability development, and future hiring needs.
• Monitor engagement, retention, collaboration, and emerging personnel issues.
• Partner with Tech Leads on matters related to technical delivery, behavior, and team dynamics.
• Cultivate a robust remote engineering culture.
• Stay engaged enough with engineering tasks to comprehend the team's challenges and environment.
• Review code, track pull requests, and engage thoughtfully in technical discussions.
• Collaborate with Tech Leads without competing for ownership of technical decisions.
• Work closely with the Head of Engineering, with support from the People team and meaningful autonomy.
• Proven experience as an Engineering Manager; this is not an entry-level management position.
• Prior experience in directly managing software engineers across multiple teams or product areas.
• Strong history of developing engineers at various career stages.
• Hands-on experience in managing performance, including addressing difficult or underperforming situations.
• Experience in making promotion and progression decisions.
• Familiarity with running or enhancing engineering career frameworks, review cycles, or progression processes.
• Background in hiring software engineers and establishing effective interview processes.
• Sufficient engineering background to understand code and contribute meaningfully to technical discussions.
• Good judgment in knowing when to engage and when to defer technical decisions to Tech Leads.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in a remote setting.
• Practical knowledge of how AI tools are transforming software engineering and experience using them in your work.
• Experience with Ruby or Rails would be advantageous, but not mandatory.
