Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Poland.

📋 Description

• Manage software engineers through regular one-on-one meetings, feedback sessions, career development, and structured growth plans.

• Oversee performance management, which includes setting objectives, conducting formal reviews, evaluating promotion cases, and handling challenging performance discussions.

• Direct the hiring process from identifying capability needs to interviewing and making final hiring decisions.

• Assist new engineers with a structured onboarding process and probation period.

• Mentor engineers towards paths in senior individual contribution and technical leadership.

• Utilize throughput, cycle time, DORA metrics, and incident trends to pinpoint people, capability, and staffing challenges.

• Collaborate with technical leaders and engineering teams to ensure the availability of the right skills, capacity, and support.

• Maintain technical involvement to assess estimates, understand technical risks, and evaluate engineering practices.

• Promote healthy operational practices, ensuring an appropriate distribution of on-call responsibilities.

• Recognize capability gaps, performance risks, engagement issues, and retention concerns.

• Drive continuous improvement initiatives and translate identified challenges into actionable steps with measurable results.

• Spearhead initiatives focused on developer enablement, operational maturity, internal automation, security, or cloud efficiency.

• Contribute to the establishment of consistent engineering management standards across a distributed organization.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 8 years of professional software engineering experience.

• At least 3 years of genuine line-management experience with software engineers.

• Proven ability to manage one-on-ones, performance reviews, career development, hiring, and performance management.

• Experience in making tough personnel decisions, including managing underperformance and, if necessary, facilitating exits.

• Demonstrated success in developing engineers into senior roles, technical leadership positions, or roles with expanded responsibilities.

• Strong technical background to assess engineering quality and engage credibly in discussions about architecture, cloud systems, delivery practices, and operational risks.

• Familiarity with modern cloud-native engineering environments, CI/CD, and production software operations.

• Working knowledge of incidents, on-call practices, observability, and production reliability.

• Familiarity with contemporary AI-enabled or LLM-based products and engineering environments.

• Experience utilizing engineering metrics and delivery data to identify issues and guide management decisions.

• Ability to balance empathy and support with clear expectations, accountability, and direct feedback.

• Excellent communication skills and confidence in collaborating across engineering, product, and operational stakeholders.

• Proficient in English and experienced in effectively working with distributed or international teams.

• Experience in regulated, high-availability, or enterprise environments such as fintech, banking, telecommunications, or similar fields is highly valued.

• Strong written and spoken English proficiency (C1+).

• Located within the European Union and able to work under a B2B contract.
