Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Hungary.

📋 Description

• Manage a team of software engineers through regular one-on-ones, providing feedback, career guidance, and structured growth plans.

• Take charge of performance management, encompassing objectives, formal evaluations, promotion cases, and challenging performance discussions.

• Lead the hiring process from defining required competencies to conducting interviews and making final hiring decisions.

• Assist new engineers with a structured onboarding process and during their probation period.

• Guide engineers towards advancing in their careers as senior individual contributors and technical leaders.

• Utilize throughput, cycle time, DORA metrics, and incident trends to pinpoint staffing, capability, and personnel issues.

• Collaborate with technical leaders and engineering functions to ensure teams possess the necessary skills, capacity, and support.

• Maintain technical involvement to scrutinize estimates, comprehend technical risks, and assess engineering practices.

• Promote healthy operational practices, including a suitable distribution of on-call responsibilities.

• Detect capability gaps, performance threats, engagement challenges, and retention concerns, and communicate these to engineering leadership.

• Foster continuous improvement and translate identified issues into actionable metrics.

• Spearhead engineering-effectiveness initiatives, such as developer enablement, operational maturity, internal automation, security, or cloud efficiency.

• Contribute to establishing consistent engineering management standards across a distributed organization.

⛳️ Requirements

• Minimum of 8 years of professional software engineering experience.

• At least 3 years of genuine line-management experience with software engineers.

• Proven ownership of one-on-ones, performance evaluations, career development, hiring, and performance management.

• Experience in making tough personnel decisions, including managing underperformance and, when necessary, exits.

• Strong track record of developing engineers into senior roles, technical leadership positions, or expanded responsibilities.

• Solid technical foundation to assess engineering quality and engage in discussions about architecture, cloud systems, delivery practices, and operational risk.

• Familiarity with modern cloud-native engineering environments, CI/CD, and production software operations.

• Working knowledge of incidents, on-call practices, observability, and production reliability.

• Acquainted with modern AI-enabled or LLM-based products and engineering environments.

• Experience leveraging engineering metrics and delivery data to diagnose issues and guide management decisions.

• Ability to balance empathy and support while maintaining clear expectations, accountability, and direct feedback.

• Excellent communication skills and confidence in collaborating with engineering, product, and operational stakeholders.

• Fluent in English.

• Proven ability to work effectively with distributed or international teams.

• Strong written and spoken English proficiency (C1+).

• Must be based within the European Union and eligible to work on a B2B contract.

• Experience in regulated, high-availability, or enterprise environments, such as fintech, banking, telecommunications, or similar, is highly valued.
