This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Europe.
• Manage software engineers through regular one-on-one meetings, providing feedback, career development, and structured growth plans.
• Oversee performance management, including setting objectives, conducting formal reviews, handling promotion cases, and addressing challenging performance discussions.
• Take charge of the hiring process, from defining capability requirements to conducting interviews and making final hiring decisions.
• Assist new engineers with a structured onboarding process and support during their probationary period.
• Guide engineers in their development towards senior individual contributor roles and technical leadership positions.
• Utilize metrics such as throughput, cycle time, DORA metrics, and incident trends to pinpoint issues related to personnel, capabilities, and staffing.
• Collaborate with technical leaders and engineering functions to ensure teams possess the necessary skills, capacity, and support.
• Maintain close technical involvement to challenge estimates, comprehend technical risks, and assess engineering practices.
• Promote healthy operational practices, including a fair distribution of on-call responsibilities.
• Recognize capability gaps, performance risks, engagement concerns, and retention threats, and relay these to engineering leadership.
• Foster continuous improvement by transforming identified issues into measurable actions.
• Lead projects focused on developer enablement, operational maturity, internal automation, security, or cloud efficiency.
• Contribute to the establishment of consistent engineering management standards across a distributed organization.
• Over 8 years of professional experience in software engineering.
• At least 3 years of authentic line-management experience with software engineers.
• Proven ownership of one-on-one meetings, performance evaluations, career development, hiring processes, and performance management.
• Experience in making tough personnel decisions, including managing underperformance and facilitating exits when necessary.
• Demonstrated success in developing engineers into senior roles, technical leadership positions, or expanded responsibilities.
• Strong technical foundation to assess engineering quality and engage credibly in discussions regarding architecture, cloud systems, delivery practices, and operational risks.
• Knowledge of modern cloud-native engineering environments, CI/CD, and software operations in production.
• Understanding of incidents, on-call protocols, observability, and production reliability.
• Familiarity with contemporary AI-enabled or LLM-based products and engineering environments.
• Proficient in using engineering metrics and delivery data to identify issues and guide management decisions.
• Ability to balance empathy and support with clear expectations, accountability, and direct feedback.
• Excellent communication skills, with confidence in collaborating across engineering, product, and operational stakeholders.
• Fluent in English, with experience working effectively in distributed or international teams.
• Strong written and spoken English proficiency (C1+).
• Experience in regulated, high-availability, or enterprise environments such as fintech, banking, telecommunications, or similar sectors is highly regarded.
• Residing within the European Union and capable of working under a B2B contract.
