Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Croatia.

📋 Description

• Manage software engineers through consistent one-on-one meetings, feedback, career progression, and structured growth plans.

• Take charge of performance management, including setting objectives, conducting formal reviews, handling promotion cases, and navigating challenging performance discussions.

• Oversee the hiring process from identifying capability requirements to interviewing and making final hiring choices.

• Assist new engineers with a structured onboarding process and during their probationary period.

• Guide engineers towards senior individual contributor roles and technical leadership pathways.

• Utilize throughput, cycle time, DORA metrics, and incident trends to pinpoint personnel, capability, and staffing challenges.

• Collaborate with technical leaders and engineering functions to ensure teams possess the necessary skills, capacity, and support.

• Maintain a close technical presence to scrutinize estimates, comprehend technical risks, and assess engineering practices.

• Promote healthy operational practices, ensuring a fair distribution of on-call responsibilities.

• Identify capability gaps, performance risks, engagement issues, and retention threats, effectively communicating these to engineering leadership.

• Drive continuous improvement by transforming identified issues into measurable actions.

• Lead initiatives aimed at enhancing developer enablement, operational maturity, internal automation, security, or cloud efficiency.

• Contribute to the establishment of consistent engineering management standards across a distributed organization.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of professional experience in software engineering.

• More than 3 years of genuine experience in line management with software engineers.

• Proven track record of owning one-on-ones, performance reviews, career development, hiring, and performance management.

• Experience in making tough personnel decisions, including managing underperformance and, when necessary, exits.

• Demonstrated success in developing engineers into senior roles, technical leadership positions, or expanded responsibilities.

• Strong technical foundation to assess engineering quality and engage in discussions regarding architecture, cloud systems, delivery practices, and operational risks.

• Familiarity with modern cloud-native engineering environments, CI/CD, and production software operations.

• Working knowledge of incidents, on-call practices, observability, and production reliability.

• Familiarity with modern AI-enabled or LLM-based products and engineering environments.

• Experience utilizing engineering metrics and delivery data to identify challenges and guide management decisions.

• Capacity to balance empathy and support with clear expectations, accountability, and direct feedback.

• Excellent communication skills and confidence working with stakeholders across engineering, product, and operations.

• Proficient in English with experience working effectively with distributed or international teams.

• Experience in regulated, high-availability, or enterprise environments such as fintech, banking, telecommunications, or similar sectors is highly regarded.

• Strong written and spoken English proficiency (C1+).

• Residing within the European Union and able to work on a B2B contract.
