Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Report directly to the Director of Engineering.

• Lead the engineering team responsible for Deputy’s Scheduling product.

• Mentor and develop engineers at various experience levels.

• Set clear expectations, provide constructive feedback, and coach engineers on their growth, performance, and career advancement.

• Foster a culture where team members are encouraged to challenge ideas, learn from mistakes, and uphold high standards.

• Clarify shifting priorities, identify risks, and ensure predictable delivery.

• Hire with intention and minimize single points of failure through cross-training and resource allocation.

• Cultivate a deep understanding of Scheduling and its architectural framework.

• Collaborate with senior engineers on technical direction, architecture, frameworks, and make build-versus-buy decisions.

• Drive improvements in performance, reliability, security, and maintainability for a multi-tenant product.

• Engage in design reviews, architectural discussions, incident analysis, and targeted proofs of concept.

• Work closely with Product, Design, and Data teams to translate strategy and customer challenges into a focused roadmap with measurable results.

• Balance immediate customer value with technical investments for enterprise scalability.

• Communicate company goals, priorities, and trade-offs to the team.

• Utilize AI-assisted and agentic development tools in real-world applications.

• Establish practices for reviewing, testing, observing, and documenting machine-generated code.

• Ensure that delivered software is accurate, secure, maintainable, and well-understood.

• Collaborate on customer-facing AI evaluations, guardrails, costs, latency, and graceful failure mechanisms.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience leading engineers as an Engineering Manager or senior engineer responsible for technical direction, delivery, and mentoring others.

• Strong technical judgment with the ability to participate in design discussions, challenge assumptions, and communicate engineering decisions to both technical and non-technical leaders.

• Experience in delivering and operating customer-facing software solutions.

• Ability to balance delivery speed, reliability, and long-term maintainability.

• Track record of nurturing engineers through clear expectations, consistent feedback, and thoughtful coaching.

• Experience collaborating with Product and Design teams to shape priorities and achieve outcomes.

• Direct experience with AI development tools and the capacity to critically evaluate their outputs.

• Skilled at creating momentum in uncertain situations by identifying constraints, uniting people, and making practical decisions.

• Familiarity with distributed, cloud-native, or multi-tenant SaaS systems at scale is a plus.

• Experience in designing resilience across services, event-driven systems, and large relational or NoSQL data stores is a plus.

• Background in shipping LLM-backed or agentic features in production is a plus.

• Experience in workforce management, scheduling, or another operationally complex product is a plus.

• Technical expertise in PHP, Go, Python, and AWS.
