Distribution Planning Engineer – System Planning, Grid Reliability

📋 Description

• Conduct studies on distribution planning, encompassing load flow analysis, voltage assessments, contingency evaluations, capacity reviews, and system reliability analyses.

• Create long-term plans for the distribution system and identify necessary infrastructure enhancements to accommodate projected load increases.

• Prepare and assist in utility construction work plans, capital improvement strategies, and system reinforcement initiatives.

• Execute arc flash studies, coordination of protection studies, and fault current assessments.

• Develop and sustain distribution system models utilizing tools such as CYME, Synergi, WindMil, ASPEN, or similar platforms.

• Conduct load forecasting and assess future capacity needs at the feeder, substation, and overall system levels.

• Evaluate equipment loading, feeder efficiency, voltage regulation, and reliability indicators.

• Aid in grid modernization efforts, including enhancements in automation, resilience, and strategic infrastructure investments.

• Collaborate with teams in distribution design, substations, protection, data solutions, and operations to formulate integrated engineering approaches.

• Lead discussions with clients, present technical suggestions, and facilitate project execution.

• Mentor junior engineers and perform technical reviews of planning and study deliverables.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.

• Approximately 5+ years of experience in electric utility or distribution planning.

• Proficiency with distribution modeling and engineering analysis tools such as CYME, Synergi, ASPEN, WindMil, ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, CAPE, PSS/E, PSCAD, etc.

• Experience in supporting construction work plans, capital planning initiatives, utility infrastructure investment programs, or protection coordination assessments.

• Willingness to travel up to 5% as necessary to assist clients and projects.

• FE/EIT certification (or the ability to obtain it).

• A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred.

• Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.

• Preferred experience in conducting arc flash studies and protection coordination evaluations.

• Experience with load forecasting, LoadSEER, or other forecasting tools is preferred.

• Experience in developing long-term distribution plans and asset management strategies is preferred.

• Familiarity with scripting, automation, or advanced data analytics is preferred.

• Experience in managing or supporting project execution, including scope, schedule, and cross-team coordination is preferred.

• Direct client interaction experience, including presenting study results or engaging in technical discussions, is preferred.

• Understanding of project financials, budgets, or resource planning is preferred.
