Director of Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Co-manage the AI engineering team consisting of approximately 30 forward-deployed engineers alongside current engineering leaders.

• Ensure team well-being and satisfaction through consistent one-on-one meetings and proactive measures addressing disengagement, burnout, and bench frustration.

• Conduct performance evaluations based on the FDE rubric.

• Enhance team skills through training sessions, playbooks, checklists, pairing, and internal documentation.

• Establish and uphold baseline AI competency standards.

• Formalize best engineering practices and convert field insights into reusable patterns.

• Monitor engagement health across the portfolio and identify risks related to delivery and client relationships.

• Assess architectures and rigorously evaluate technical approaches.

• Lead evaluation strategies, instrumentation, and impact measurement initiatives.

• Step in as a technical lead on engagements when necessary.

• Collaborate with talent acquisition on sourcing, conducting hiring-manager interviews, interviewer calibration, and establishing the technical bar.

• Allocate resources to engagements based on skill, growth potential, and client compatibility while ensuring a balance between utilization and development.

• Assist in scoping and pre-sales discussions.

• Serve as a senior escalation point for clients and partners.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of engineering experience.

• More than 3 years of direct management experience with senior engineers, encompassing hiring, performance management, and challenging discussions.

• Proven experience leading teams of 15 or more engineers across multiple concurrent projects or engagements.

• Proficient in reading architectures, identifying weaknesses, and suggesting enhancements.

• Strong full-stack expertise in TypeScript, React, Node.js, and Python or Go.

• Demonstrated ability to build and deploy production agentic applications utilizing orchestration and tool-calling patterns.

• Experience establishing evaluation harnesses and testing infrastructure for agentic applications utilizing real prompts and business metrics.

• Knowledgeable in MLOps or LLMOps, including monitoring, guardrails, and human-in-the-loop design concepts.

• Familiarity with at least one major cloud service provider: GCP, AWS, or Azure.

• Practical experience in AI-native usage of coding agents, harnesses, and workflows.

• Background in consulting, agency work, or forward-deployed engineering.

• Capacity to manage client expectations and timelines effectively.

• Proven record of developing individuals through training, onboarding, or mentorship initiatives.

• Comfort with operating in uncertain situations and making independent decisions.

• Outstanding communication skills across executives, staff engineers, and in written updates.

• Nice to have: enterprise experience in financial services, healthcare, or retail.

• Nice to have: experience scaling forward-deployed engineering, solutions engineering, or professional services teams.

• Nice to have: experience in AI enablement or developer productivity programs.

• Nice to have: background as a founder, CTO, or involvement in early venture-backed startups.

• Nice to have: experience in LLM fine-tuning.

• Nice to have: familiarity with Kubernetes and container orchestration.

• Nice to have: experience with scalable data pipeline or data lake design.
