Director of Commercial Accounting

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.

📋 Description

• Articulate and implement the accounting strategy for the inventory portfolio, which encompasses owned products, consignment, leased shop-in-shops, and dropship arrangements.

• Supervise accounting policies and operational execution related to inventory valuation, sales and margin reserves, and cost of goods sold.

• Offer strategic financial partnership to leaders in Merchandising and Supply Chain regarding gross margins, markdown effects, and inventory aging.

• Develop and uphold accounting frameworks for consignment models, brand partner margin divisions, concessions, and product licensing agreements.

• Ensure that margin and inventory reporting complies with US GAAP, debt compliance standards, and relevant deadlines.

• Create reference schedules and executive presentation materials for accounting and disclosure evaluations.

• Direct the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes for inventory and sales reserves, payables reserves and settlements, as well as other margin influences.

• Manage external audit relationships concerning inventory valuation, shrinkage provisions, obsolescence modeling, borrowing base assessments, and reporting.

• Oversee interactions with bank agents, auditors, and valuation experts.

• Lead commercial and financial involvement in technology and systems projects that impact inventory, sales, and margin.

• Propel automation initiatives for landed-cost calculations, vendor allowance tracking, cross-banner inventory transfers, reserve analysis, and accounting.

• Build, mentor, and guide a high-performing team of inventory and gross margin accountants, analysts, and specialists.

• Promote analytical rigor, cross-functional collaboration, and ongoing process enhancement.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is mandatory.

• 8–12+ years of progressive experience in accounting and finance leadership.

• At least 4–5 years in a managerial or director position within the retail or consumer goods sector is preferred.

• CPA or MBA is highly desirable.

• Capability to synthesize complex GAAP regulations and convey financial narratives to executives, auditors, and board members.

• Proficient in establishing relationships across business units and functional support teams.

• Attention to detail regarding financial data integrity and commitment to reporting deadlines.

• Expert-level understanding of Weighted-Average-Cost Accounting for retail operations, landed cost structures, and luxury consignment models.

• Strong technical accounting expertise and experience in applying authoritative guidance to intricate cross-functional transactions.

• Proven experience in managing multi-channel inventory.

• Extensive background with enterprise-level stock ledger/inventory management, order management, and point-of-sale systems.

• Proficient in enterprise ERPs such as Workday, SAP, or Oracle.

• Experienced with financial reporting/consolidation software like Workiva, OneStream, Hyperion, or EPM.

• Established track record of leading digital transformation or finance-system implementation initiatives.
