
Director Engineering, Retail Media – Marketplace

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Netherlands, +1 more country.
• Establish the engineering strategy across the Retail Media and Marketplace sectors.
• Determine the points of convergence or separation for the platforms.
• Lead and expand an engineering team of approximately 40 engineers across 5–7 teams.
• Develop Engineering Managers and their respective teams.
• Influence the organization as the domains progress.
• Foster an environment that promotes clear ownership and autonomy.
• Take responsibility for delivery, reliability, architecture, and technical debt.
• Enhance engineering maturity and empower teams to operate swiftly without sacrificing quality.
• Collaborate on roadmaps with Product and Commercial teams.
• Align engineering priorities with take rate, advertiser ROAS, seller economics, and contribution margin.
• Manage engineering relations with external platforms, integrators, and agencies.
• Make decisions regarding build/buy/partner strategies and oversee integrations, SLAs, and vendor performance.
• Report directly to the Executive Director of Engineering / VP of Engineering.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience leading multiple engineering teams through managers or leads.
• Proven experience in guiding organizations through substantial changes, such as merging domains, introducing new scopes, or replacing platforms.
• Familiarity with developing commercial B2B platforms, including marketplaces, retail media, ad tech, payments, or seller/partner platforms.
• Experience with high-traffic and transactional systems.
• Strong technical judgment paired with commercial insights.
• Ability to link engineering decisions to business outcomes.
• Experience confidently partnering with senior Product and Commercial stakeholders.
• Proven track record of engineering excellence and measurable improvements.
• Comfort in navigating ambiguity, external partnerships, and competing priorities.
• Proficient English communication skills.
• Membership in the Urban Sports Club (M) package.
