This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Develop and enhance firmware for EEG and biosensing wearable devices.
• Take full ownership of firmware releases from start to finish, covering scope, code freeze, quality assurance, regression cycles, release notes, and communication across teams.
• Maintain and expand existing STM32 firmware while supporting the introduction of new platforms.
• Design and troubleshoot BLE protocols, focusing on throughput, latency, connection reliability, and field connection challenges.
• Integrate Bluetooth audio codecs along with I2S/PDM microphone and speaker pathways, ensuring continuous sensor streaming.
• Implement biosignal acquisition for EEG, PPG, and fNIRS front ends, which includes sensor presets, on-device filtering, stream formats, and telemetry.
• Configure PMICs, manage fuel gauging, optimize low-power and sleep modes, and enhance battery life.
• Conduct field debugging across firmware, hardware, and app layers utilizing logs, RTT capture, crash reporting, and product analytics.
• Create manufacturing and factory-test firmware, including flashing flows, reducing test times, and developing internal tools.
• Initiate new hardware, peripherals, PMICs, batteries, and sensors by referencing datasheets, schematics, and measurements.
• Collaborate with mobile app, cloud, QA, research, customer care, and contract manufacturing teams across various time zones.
• Document architecture notes, protocol specifications, release documentation, and onboarding materials.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in embedded firmware development using C and scripting with Python.
• Familiarity with RTOS (ThreadX, Zephyr, etc.) or experience in initializing an unfamiliar vendor SDK.
• Knowledge of PCB communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, JTAG/SWD, etc.
• Experience with STM32 is advantageous.
• Proven track record of managing firmware releases, including versioning, branching, and defining release criteria.
• Ability to independently lead firmware projects.
• Skill in designing firmware architecture and developing scalable firmware protocols.
• Experience with secure bootloaders and firmware update processes; knowledge of MCUboot or similar, including image signing, rollback protection, and encryption.
• Proficiency in BLE technology, including protocol design and troubleshooting real-world connection issues.
• Capability to read schematics and component datasheets, bring up evaluation boards, take measurements, and provide feedback on circuit design.
• Comfortable using J-Link / ST-Link, SWD, SWO/RTT, logic analyzers, and oscilloscopes.
• Willingness to learn and practice meditation.
• Experience with consumer audio and Bluetooth audio stacks is a plus.
• Familiarity with biosignals in wearables or medical device firmware is an additional advantage.
• Knowledge of analog and digital signal processing and sensor front ends is beneficial.
• Experience with low-power design, PMICs, and fuel gauging is favorable.
• Understanding of the software development life cycle, agile methodology, CI/CD, and hardware-in-the-loop testing for embedded systems is beneficial.
• Experience collaborating with contract manufacturers or offshore engineering partners and factory test systems is a plus.
