
Director, Engineering – Retail Media & Marketplace

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Netherlands.
• Establish engineering direction within the Retail Media and Marketplace sectors.
• Determine when platforms should integrate or remain distinct.
• Lead and expand an engineering organization consisting of roughly 40 engineers distributed across 5–7 teams.
• Develop Engineering Managers along with their respective teams.
• Shape the organization as the domains progress.
• Foster an environment that promotes clear ownership and autonomy.
• Take responsibility for delivery, reliability, architecture, and managing technical debt.
• Enhance engineering maturity, allowing teams to operate swiftly without sacrificing quality.
• Collaborate on roadmaps with Product and Commercial teams.
• Link engineering priorities to take rate, advertiser ROAS, seller economics, and contribution margin.
• Direct engineering relationships with external platforms, integrators, and agencies.
• Make decisions regarding build/buy/partner strategies.
• Oversee integrations, SLAs, and vendor performance.
• Report directly to the Executive Director of Engineering / VP of Engineering.
• Lead through two Engineering Managers while collaborating with Product and Commercial leadership.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience in leading multiple engineering teams through managers or leads.
• Proven experience guiding organizations through significant transitions, such as merging domains, introducing new scopes, or replacing platforms.
• Experience in developing commercial B2B platforms, including marketplaces, retail media, ad tech, payments, or seller/partner platforms.
• Familiarity with high-traffic and transactional systems.
• Strong technical judgment coupled with commercial insight.
• Capability to connect engineering decisions with business outcomes.
• Confidence in partnering with senior Product and Commercial stakeholders.
• Evidence of measurable improvements in engineering excellence.
• Ability to navigate ambiguity, external partners, and competing priorities comfortably.
• Proficient English communication skills.
