This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Collaborate with the Editor in Chief to establish and implement Chalkbeat’s editorial vision.
• Supervise multiple local bureaus and reporting teams.
• Ensure that Chalkbeat's coverage facilitates informed decision-making and stimulates debate.
• Mentor leaders in setting and achieving goals, tracking progress, and fostering professional development.
• Assist in the rollout of the Civic News Academy.
• Spearhead high-priority projects, including improvements in impact tracking, development of newsroom AI strategies, and future geographic expansion.
• Work in conjunction with the growth and community team to broaden the loyal audience base.
• Guarantee that enterprise projects are engaging and executed with excellence.
• Advocate for organizational priorities to local teams and relay local needs to organizational leadership.
• Offer daily journalism guidance and strategic direction for newsroom initiatives.
• Over 10 years of professional experience, including leadership roles.
• Proven experience in reporting and editing breaking news, as well as daily and enterprise stories.
• A history of leading effective teams with inspiration, high standards, and accountability.
• Experience in coaching staff across various experience levels.
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects from initial concept through to sustainable execution.
• Expertise in developing editorial strategies and growing an audience.
• In-depth understanding of America’s education narrative and a curiosity about its future.
• Must be able to work within the continental United States.
• Authorization to work in the U.S., with employment eligibility verified through E-Verify.
• Capability to perform primarily sedentary tasks and utilize standard office equipment for up to 8 hours daily.
