
Data Engineer – fully remote within Europe

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Europe.
• Take charge of the operational integrity and reliability of the data platform from start to finish.
• Diagnose and resolve recurring issues within the on-premises Microsoft SQL Server environment.
• Oversee cross-system access through linked servers, OPENQUERY, and PolyBase.
• Detect stale feeds, broken joins, and unnoticed changes in source systems, and facilitate resolution with data owners.
• Maintain Airflow Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs) and Python jobs across Windows and Linux virtual machines.
• Manage failed tasks, backfills, and dependencies in data flows.
• Model new source domains within the data warehouse.
• Develop data models enabling analysts to work independently.
• Establish automated data quality checks for freshness, volume, referential integrity, and business rules.
• Optimize SQL queries, stored procedures, indexes, and execution plans.
• Enhance alerting, logging, runbooks, and automation to mitigate recurring incidents.
• Review SQL and pipeline code generated by AI prior to production deployment.
• Create tests that allow the team to work securely with AI-assisted engineering.
• Collaborate with business intelligence, analytics, and data-owning teams throughout the organization.
• A minimum of 3 years of core data engineering experience in a production setting.
• Proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server, including excellent T-SQL, indexing strategies, execution plans, query tuning, partitioning, linked servers, OPENQUERY, and PolyBase.
• Experience in data modeling with warehouse tables and dimensional models.
• Strong proficiency in Python for pipelines, transformation, and automation tasks.
• Hands-on experience with Airflow in a production environment, including authoring, operating, and debugging DAGs, as well as managing scheduling, retries, backfills, dependencies, and task-failure tracing.
• Practical experience with Claude Code or a similar agentic coding tool, MCP servers, and workflows powered by large language models (LLMs).
• Capability to validate AI-generated SQL and pipeline code by analyzing queries, reviewing execution plans, and ensuring outputs align with source data.
• Familiarity with Git and GitLab, including branching, merge requests, code reviews, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Proficient in debugging on both Windows and Linux virtual machines.
• Basic knowledge of Azure or AWS services.
• Excellent communication skills in English.
• Demonstrated ownership and ability to manage issues from inception to resolution.
• Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Lakehouse or Warehouse, Data Factory pipelines, and OneLake is a plus.
• Knowledge of building MCP servers or internal LLM tooling would be advantageous.
• Familiarity with Power BI or another business intelligence tool would be beneficial.
• Exposure to rapidly growing B2C or subscription-based businesses would be a plus.
