Counsel/Senior Counsel, Litigation

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Oversee litigation, third-party processes, dispute resolution, and regulatory inquiries involving the company.

• Formulate strategies on innovative legal issues and take charge of in-house discovery execution.

• Manage external legal counsel throughout all phases of litigation, with a focus on case strategy and written advocacy.

• Create, enhance, document, and implement repeatable litigation processes.

• Advise stakeholders on litigation risks and ensure alignment of legal strategies with business objectives.

• Address daily litigation inquiries from legal teams and cross-functional partners.

• Collaborate with Customer Support to provide guidance on and resolve minor disputes and escalations.

• Keep track of regulatory and policy changes related to generative AI.

• Counsel AI safety, product, and engineering teams on regulatory and policy updates.

• Acquire knowledge of the technical aspects of Runway’s products and industry to inform legal counsel.

• Assist in other legal areas as required.

⛳️ Requirements

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.

• Admission in good standing with at least one state bar in the U.S.

• Over 5 years of focused litigation experience, including clerkships.

• Experience in litigation with a mix of copyright, class action, securities, and regulatory matters.

• Extensive understanding of complex civil litigation practices and procedures, including discovery and federal and state court rules.

• Proven ability to manage litigation cases, devise case strategies, handle discovery, draft and edit briefs, efficiently gather information, and prepare witnesses for depositions.

• Familiarity with key legal challenges in the generative AI sector.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

• Strong judgment under pressure and solid business acumen.

• Capability to handle multiple workstreams, prioritize tasks effectively, and consistently achieve results.

• Strong sense of ownership and accountability.

• Creative problem-solving skills, low ego, curiosity, and a proactive approach.

• Experience with emerging technologies, especially in generative AI and copyright litigation (preferred).

• In-house legal experience, particularly in a technology environment (preferred).

• Knowledge of Runway and the generative AI video industry (preferred).
