Corporate Safety Specialist – Rail

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois, +6 more states.

📋 Description

• Deliver hands-on safety leadership and operational assistance to Cando's Rail operations throughout North America.

• Perform regular site evaluations and field observations of switching, mechanical, loading, washing, transloading, and maintenance activities.

• Collaborate with Service Delivery teams and frontline staff to pinpoint and enhance safe work practices.

• Offer real-time coaching, feedback, and acknowledgment of commendable safety behaviors.

• Aid in operational risk assessments for current, evolving, and new rail business activities.

• Engage in and support investigations of incidents, near misses, and high-potential events.

• Conduct root cause analyses, formulate corrective actions, evaluate quality and effectiveness, and assist in incident resolution.

• Mentor operational leaders on hazard identification, job briefings, pre-shift discussions, and employee involvement.

• Examine operating procedures and safety standards, identify discrepancies between written requirements and field execution, and promote continuous improvement of Cando's Safety Management System.

• Support field leadership with relevant regulatory and company requirements, and assist with regulatory inspections, inquiries, and follow-up actions.

• Take part in safety reviews for new clients, projects, facilities, and evolving or newly acquired operations.

• Facilitate contractor and service-provider safety programs while fostering cross-functional partnerships.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of five (5) years of combined experience in safety or rail operations roles.

• A robust understanding of rail switching, loading, transloading, and terminal operations along with their associated hazards.

• Proven dedication to safety leadership in industrial settings, utilizing a coaching-oriented approach.

• Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.

• Capability to work autonomously in a remote position, manage a travel-intensive schedule, and prioritize multiple requests.

• Proficient computer skills including experience with Windows-based systems, MS Office/M365 Suite, and safety management or incident reporting software.

• A valid state driver's license and passport, with the capability to travel across the United States and Canada.

• Willingness to travel approximately 50% of the time, including overnight and occasional extended trips.

• Capacity to work outdoors under varying weather conditions.

• Ability to walk and stand on uneven ballast surfaces for extended periods and navigate safely through active rail yards and industrial facilities.

• Capability to wear the necessary personal protective equipment.

• Ability to remain seated for extended periods when required for remote office tasks.

• A bachelor's degree is preferred but not mandatory.

• Safety or Rail certification (CSP, ASP, DSLE, etc.) is preferred.

• Familiarity with DOT, PHMSA, FRA, and/or OSHA regulations is preferred.
