Commissioning Engineer II – Mechanical

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Utah.

📋 Description

• Execute Level 1–5 commissioning for base building, security, life safety, electrical, mechanical, EPMS, and BMS systems within data center settings.

• Supervise, document, and monitor commissioning processes, which include the testing and validation of connectivity, network infrastructure, security, life safety systems, electrical equipment, cooling solutions, and automation systems.

• Act as the project manager and primary contact for a third-party commissioning agent.

• Support construction and commissioning efforts, which may include working nights and/or weekends when necessary.

• Travel approximately 75% of the time to various U.S. locations.

• Assist with site construction tasks and installations in collaboration with the QTS Development Team and external construction partners.

• Create thorough Level 1–5 commissioning plans.

• Perform commissioning activities to ensure systems are installed, tested, and validated according to industry standards and client specifications.

• Identify, monitor, and resolve commissioning challenges while providing feedback to program management.

• Generate and/or review commissioning documentation, testing procedures, reports, and as-built documentation.

• Observe equipment testing and confirm sequences of operations and operational documentation.

• Collaborate with design engineers, project managers, contractors, commissioning agents, and facilities operations personnel.

• Implement quality control protocols and comply with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.

• Develop and test site-specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Method of Procedures (MOPs), and Emergency Response Plans (ERPs) in conjunction with facilities operations.

• Train end users and maintenance staff on commissioned systems.

• Utilize the Change Management Process to secure approval for both preventative and corrective maintenance.

• Initiate and finalize maintenance tasks with necessary documentation using QTS processes and software.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Project Management, Computer Science, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

• A minimum of five years of experience in data center engineering, commissioning, project management, or a related field.

• Experience in building maintenance, CCTV and access control systems, networking, telecommunications, and/or fire detection and suppression systems.

• Willingness to travel to other Data Center locations as needed.

• Proficient in the MS Office Suite.

• US citizenship is required by law due to federal customer contracts.

• Strong understanding of mechanical and electrical equipment, systems, and design aspects related to data centers.

• Familiarity with electricity and medium to low voltage electrical distribution systems.

• Experience with emergency backup systems, including generators, UPS, and battery backups.

• Knowledge of mechanical cooling solutions, including chillers, CRAH, CRAC, pumps, and heat exchangers.

• Understanding of equipment operation and maintenance, single line drawings, critical scripted work, and sequences of operations.

• Capability to analyze system operations, identify the root causes of issues and malfunctions, and implement corrective actions.

• Ability to acquire and apply job-related knowledge within established guidelines and expectations.

• Skills in developing solutions and creating technical plans for projects.

• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

• Ability to work effectively in a team setting.

• Computer proficiency and familiarity with MS Office, Outlook, and web-based applications.

• Physical capability to perform frequent typing, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, and lifting.

• Ability to regularly lift up to 50 lbs., with heavier items managed with the assistance of others or lifting aids.
