Commissioning Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Assist in the formulation and implementation of commissioning plans, procedures, schedules, checklists, and testing protocols.

• Aid in the development of commissioning strategies and sequences in collaboration with project, engineering, construction, automation, vendor, and client teams.

• Carry out and oversee onsite commissioning from pre-commissioning through to start-up, Site Acceptance Testing, performance testing, and handover.

• Liaise with construction teams, vendors, subcontractors, and project personnel to coordinate daily commissioning activities.

• Facilitate commissioning meetings and provide updates on progress, priorities, testing activities, constraints, and resource requirements.

• Verify the mechanical completion and readiness of systems.

• Conduct equipment inspections, checkout, calibration verification, loop checks, I/O checks, and functional testing.

• Coordinate and execute dry and wet commissioning for mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control, automation, and process systems.

• Assist in testing PLC, HMI, SCADA, and control systems during commissioning and start-up.

• Troubleshoot issues related to equipment, instrumentation, control systems, and processes, and aid in corrective measures.

• Collaborate with automation engineers and equipment vendors to confirm system functionality and performance.

• Prepare and review risk assessments, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) reviews, and commissioning safety plans.

• Ensure adherence to project specifications, company policies, quality standards, and safety regulations.

• Document commissioning outcomes and maintain records, reports, checklists, and punch-list items.

• Monitor and report on progress, unresolved issues, corrective actions, and testing outcomes.

• Assist in punch-list management and the resolution of deficiencies.

• Collaborate with operations staff and client representatives during start-up, testing, and handover.

• Support operator training and ensure operational readiness.

• Review and validate as-built documentation, operating manuals, and turnover packages.

• Aid in the preparation of commissioning reports and final handover documentation.

• Advocate for safety and report or address unsafe conditions and practices.

⛳️ Requirements

• Comprehensive understanding of commissioning and start-up processes for industrial process facilities.

• Familiarity with mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control, and automation systems.

• Proven experience in performing loop checks, I/O checks, functional testing, equipment checkout, and commissioning tasks.

• Working knowledge of PLC, HMI, SCADA, industrial communication networks, and instrumentation systems.

• Capacity to read and interpret P&IDs, process flow diagrams, electrical schematics, control drawings, and technical documentation.

• Strong troubleshooting and analytical problem-solving abilities.

• Knowledge of commissioning safety protocols, including LOTO, permit-to-work systems, and risk assessments.

• Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work independently and effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

• Minimum of 3-5 years of pertinent industrial experience, including hands-on commissioning and/or start-up, along with operational experience.

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical field; an equivalent technical diploma and relevant commissioning experience may also be considered.

• Willingness to travel to project sites across North America up to 70% of the time.

• Capability to work in industrial and construction settings, including climbing ladders, navigating uneven surfaces, and wearing necessary personal protective equipment (PPE).

• Flexibility to work extended hours during critical start-up and commissioning phases when necessary.
