This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Oversee the remote coding team assisting Veterans Affairs medical centers throughout VISN 7.
• Serve as the primary liaison for VA HIMS supervisors and coding leaders.
• Ensure availability during the business hours of the Charleston VA Medical Center (Eastern Time).
• Delegate tasks to coders and monitor their performance against each facility's turnaround times.
• Alert the VA by the second business day if a deadline is in jeopardy.
• Conduct ongoing quality assessments of at least 5% of all coded data, covering ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, DRGs, and abstracted data.
• Compile quality results by coder and distribute weekly reports to each facility.
• Develop corrective action plans and mentor coders when accuracy dips below 95%.
• Address coder inquiries regarding ambiguous documentation and escalate issues to VA contacts as necessary.
• Oversee re-reviews of records questioned by the VA prior to billing and responses to claim denials.
• Assist in the preparation of monthly progress reports, quarterly summary reports, kickoff materials, work plans, staff rosters, and training documentation.
• Educate coders on VA policies, VHA coding guidelines, as well as VistA and CPRS workflows.
• Monitor mandatory VA training and background investigations.
• Plan for staffing adjustments, including a two-week transition period when a coder is reassigned.
• Support the coding of approximately 260,000 encounters annually across eight facilities.
• Possession of an active RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, or CPC-H credential.
• Minimum of 3 years of coding experience, along with supervisory, lead, or QA experience.
• Comprehensive understanding of inpatient and outpatient coding, including ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS, DRGs, E/M, and NCCI edits.
• Completion of an accredited coding, HIM, or health information technician program.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for collaboration with VA leaders and clinicians.
• Must be a US citizen.
• Capability to pass a federal background investigation (NACI) and fingerprinting.
• Completion of the VA's annual Privacy and Information Security Awareness and HIPAA training (TMS 10176 and 10203).
• Preferred: Experience within VA or VHA HIMS, including VistA, CPRS, PTF, PCE, and Integrated Billing.
• Preferred: Experience in managing a remote coding team across various facilities.
• Preferred: Background in coding auditing or QA.
